Usk Has Transportation With the opening of the Idaho & Washington Northern extension to Usk, the little town on the Pend Oreille river is again springing into business activ ity. The extension of the railroad was opened formally to passenger traffic last week. Previous to the extension the traffic had been conducted by boat from Newport to lone. The townsite of Usk is 20 miles north of Newport, on the Pend Oreille river, in the heart of the Calispel country, and about a mile and a half south of the old town of Cusick. The site selected is the highest along the river, the banks of the river generally being subject to annual overflow. Under the law passed by the recent legislature, allowingthe bonding of the land for the construction of dikes, a dike system is to be built at the town site of Usk, which will mak- available for the farmers some of the finest meadow and agriculturaal land in Washington. THE NORTH POLE Commissioners Visit County Farm On last Saturday the board of county commissioners made an official inspec tion of the county poor farm and the work of its supervision, and from all reports, things out there are not in as satisfactory shape as the public might demand if the institution was held up for inspection by those who pay taxes for its support. It is a poor farm in fact as well as in name. The 160 acres of land comprising this homely retreat for the fallen victims of the "Car of Juggernaut" is unkempt as a potters' field, there is no water, excepting that pumped from a well in a clay bed, and the water here is really unfit for use. The fences are out of repair, farm lands are not tilled to their full value, the fruit trees are not properly cared for, and the buildings for housing the stock are hardly worthy the name. The 16 paupers, most of whom have seen days of luxurious thrift, are not pleased with their home, which is a two-story frame building bereft of th...
