A DOG S VALENTINE. BY J AC LOWELL. It wos the 14th of February, ? but I had forgotten the date.? Bo intent was 1 upon a certain important erraud that the date had slipped my mind, and I am ashamed to confess that I had no thought of good Saint Valentine and his merry missives. A dog caused mo to remember. Where and how ? That is a short story in itself. I will begin at the beginning. * * * * * * She sat opposite me in the crowded depot?a forlorn little figure wrapped in a huge black cape which had been fashioned for a woman twice her size. I could not see her face. Its upper half covered by a thick, black veil, its lower half by an old-fa?hioned silk muffler. She was so tiny and so still that I could not help watching her and wondering whose mother she was and where she was going. I was sure she was somebody's mother, for the stoop of her shoulders and the lines of her gloveless hands told me the story far plainer than her face could have told it. And I was right. Across from the ti...

The Town Council is contemplating a number of matters that have for their purpose the welfare and development ot the community, and to carry them out will necessarilly have to go before the people for their approval, as an additional bond issue will be required to carry them into effect. Among those matters under consideration is the entering into a contract with the Roanoke Water Power Company for the electric lighting of the town and the pumping of the water. If this is done, it will result in a considerable saving to the taxpayers annually, but will require an outlay at the beginning of several thousand dollars for the purchase of two centrifugal pumps, the stringing of larger wires, purchase of metres, transformers etc....

A NIGHTLY RIDE. In the old parsonage everything was quiet. The minister was reading his Bible and by his side sdt his daughter, sewing on h^r trousseau, which was to be ready just after Christmas, when her wedding was to be celebrated, and she was to leave her old home and widowed father forever. "Anna, darlintr. vrm work t.nn hard," said the old minister, looking up. "There ure still six weeks left before you go away from me aud now tonight when Herbert is coming to stay with us over Sunday, his little sweetheart ought not look tired." "I am afraid ho cannot come tonight in that terrible blizzird, and dearly though 1 would love to see him, I hope he will not attempt to reach here." "Oh, when you are a young man and in love it takes more than a blizzard to keep you away from your sweetheart." Just then then the doorbell rang. "Oh, it is Herbert," the young girl cried joyfully, and ran to the door. The old servant had already opened the door when Anna rushed into her finance's arms. ...
