A Chapter on Fools. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 2 September 1880

A Chapter on Fools. Mb. Editor—There is an old praverb which saitli, "Experience teaeheth fools." In the days of yore. I stud led "Murray U Grammar." and "Archbishop WhateIy»s Logic." out to this day am at a loss to know the nature of that short sentence of three words— whether it is a universal or particular affirmative. Of course, fools being the object in an affirmative sentence (and beyond leaching) cannot be distributed (thank heaven!) therefore, fools only mean some fools. The difficulty, however, lieo with the subject. ■ Those of us who are not fools well know that all experience, taken in an absolute sense, does not teach some fools, nor anybody else. Neither does every particular experience of some fool teach him. Tiie only thing left for us to do is to render the sentence, some experience teaches some j'<jols> and in this way limit the number of fools influenced by experience to a few —say two or three, and take good care of these. Taking the serv ten...

Surveyor, will doubtless meet with uo opposition in securing re* nomination in the Republican Convens lion. J. F. Smith, President of the Board of Supervisors. 8 I. Marston, our present Public Administrator. L. C. Morehouse, ot San Leandro, R. B. Hard, of Oakland, and the present incumbent, Jeremiah Tyrrel, each have an-eye nut for the Republican nomination for Sheriff. A nomination on the Republican ticket is con. sidered equivalent to an election, and the tight is the refore likely to be a "hard" one. The total length of the main track ...
