CHANG, Ph.D. Psychologist - To All Parents and Children The Fallible Parent I think Life itself must be the most ef- fective teacher , and Living, the most fas- cinating book from which all knowledge derives. Indeed , I have found myself learning more and more about life, things that years of professional training can barely teach. It was in that year a long time ago when I suddenly found my- self a parent. The coming of my son op- ened my eyes to things which hitherto were veiled by ignoi— ance and misconcep- tion. Besides discov- ery of things related to children , I also discovered a lot of things about being a parent. First, to my amazement,is the dis- covery that I was still myself; that is, I was still the per- son with my habits, temperament , aspira- tions and shortcom- ings. The fact that I am a parent, a mem- ber of the "ruling class" in the family, did not change my personhood ve...

Out of appreci- ation Pershing worked at and succeeded in getting about 500 of these people admitted as immigrants to this count ry at a time when immigration laws restricted such entry. Most of them came to San Antonio. Some of the Pershing Chinese became masons and , with chara cteri sti c industry, constructed a meeting hall which combined Chinese orn- amentation with the motifs of San Antoni- o's Latin-influenced culture. The obliteration of this small if noble piece of history was made even more dis- spiriting by the fact that the Chee Kung Tong meeting hall was listed on the Nation- al Register of Histo- ric Places. Pat Osborne , City of San Antonio Histo- ric Preservation Of- ficer, told reporters that not only was the action illegal , but the responsible comp- any was not even li- censed as a city dem- olition contractor . Officials added that the company had been warned not to wreck the building , which had been vacant...

While Houston's Asian American communities have yet to develop a publication that is truly representative of all its Asian com- munities, several ci- ties with more 'es- tablished' Asian Am- erican populations have done just that. Two which will be highlighted in this issue's Connections are Asian Week and Jade.
