i'lcjcofjlft Center, Inc. F. 0. Box 45436 Dallas, Texas 75235 V Council Votes To Keep Chief Nestoroff SMITHVILLE — After 60 days of evaluating the Smithville Police Department, the city council voted Monday night to fully re • instate Police Chief Bill Nestoroff with full pay and to adopt a six • point guide- line for the department. . "We hope that what we've done is for the nest of the community," said Mayor Bill Davison of the de- cision which came shortly after mid- night. "What we really need now is unity. SEC. I, PAGE 2 THSBASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SM1THVILLE. TEXAS 78957 THURSDAY. AUGUST 24. 19?J niions Hatfields and McCoys? Usually, we would like to see a problem solved through discussion and compromise. Such was the impression we had of the Smithville city coun- cil s nandling of the police department re-evaluation. _ The council voted to increase both pav and benefits and to re-instate Chief William Nestoroff, despite allegations made bv two ex-patrolmen against him last June. Apparently Chief Nestoroff thought otherwise. Monday night Nestoroff attacked the character of a man partly respon- sible for the improvements recently approved for the police department. Hal Wallace helped formulate and pass the pay increases and other benefits which should aid the department in finding quality men in the future. And, if indee'd Wallace was on a "vendetta" against the chief, then why did he vote along with the other four council members to keep Nestoroff on the city payroll? The remarks aimed ...

AUGUST 24. 197ft1 M |ft • ' New Director Sets Musical Plans SMITHVILLE - New Smithville High School Band Director Joe Du- Pas stated Monday that thus far. after a week of practice the band has been having about 30 or 35 show up for practice with a high of 42 at one session. The director said that he believed he had a lot a lot of talent to work with but that the band would be very voung, with a number of fresnmen and sophomores, and that it was difficult to get very much accomplished until he could get the en- tire band together when school begins. DuPas went on to say that, at first at least, the band would stick to the traditional marches such as "Giant" and "The Ramsgate March" for their routines and they would also stay with trad- itional formations, doing six steps for every five vards. However, DuPas had plans for doing other things later in the year including playing an im- pressive march - type arrang...
