16 SpOTtS QcuUr&.um Press Box: Mike Cagle Sports Editor Since our last issue a lot of sports news has taken place here on the forty acres. The HSU vol- leyball team has reached the top of the conference. Congratulations to the Cowgirls which are 7-3 in conference play with two more TIAA matchups left If the Cow- girls can defeat Sul Ross and Mid- western they can win the TIAA. What a great year so far keep it up ladies! The mens soccer team has won two straight games and is cur- rently 3-2 versus district VIE op- ponents. The Cowboys have just three scheduled games left before the district tournament which will be played on November 5 and 6. The Cowgirl soccer team has had a few crazy scheduling problems but have played well against some tough opponents. The Cowgirls lost to both Richland College and Texas A&M by the score of 6-1. This is pretty competitive with the scholarship programs. Hang in there ladies! Cowboy football notes: After the 38-7 win over cross-town ri- val M...

HARDIN'SMMONS U N R October 28 1993 Abilene Texas Vol. 81 No. 8 Group Focuses On Crime On And Off-Campus College Press Service Dana Getzinger didn't worry much about being a victim until Jan. 17 1988. That was when the University of Georgia sophomore was stabbed in the chest as she lay asleep in her off-campus apart- ment In the early morning hours a man in a ski mask slipped through a sliding glass door. Getzinger woke up when she felt a sudden pain in her chest. Fighting off her attacker she thought the man had punched her. The knife had pierced her aorta and liver. If it hadn't been for the quick work of her roommates and two fortunate circumstances an ambulance happened to be in the neighborhood and a cardiovascu- lar surgeon was on duty at the hospital Getzinger would have died. Instead she was on the oper- ating table in 16 minutes. Later Getzinger would dis- cover that her experience was not uncommon but there was no way students and parents could make an informed decision ab...

2 viTrntPoi: Octo6er2$ 1993 Manifest Destiny? In the last fifteen years a dan- gerous trend has developed within the Christian church. This trend of right-wing political involve- ment has placed the Christianity opposed to equal rights for gay and lesbian individuals. In fact many havequestioned the authen- ticity of my Christianity simply because I do support gay and les- bian rights. However this movement to "restore American to its Godly heritage is neither biblically nor theologically accu- rate. The new spokesperson for Christianity in the world is Rush Limbaugh conservative extrordinaire. Moderate view- points are cast aside as "ungodly" as Christians rush to embrace right-wing ideas and ideologies from conservative environmental standpoints to an homophobic at- titudes which seeks to deny gay and lesbians their rights as indi- viduals. In fact in the last major election Christians who voted for Bill Clinton or other Democrats were ridiculed and frowned upon. God's people seem...

Vl'E'WPOinfr 3 October 28 1993 Guest Editorials Refute JekyllHyde Editorial Was God Really At The Game? Yelling Is Just A Sign Of Spirit I too can tell I'm a Texan because I too LOVE football. Being a native West-Texan I have grown up around the madness as- sociated with the football season and think it is important to put football in its proper light not only the bad things and the way it leads people down as mentioned in last week's column but the good things as well. I think we can all safely say that when you put people in a situation involving athletics whether they are directly involved or not a different competitive side comes out. Some people choose to look at the bad aspects of this side. It has been said that the way our fans have presented themselves has been a disgrace to the school our awesome Cowboy football team and even God Him- self. All I have to say in this matter is COME ON. I agree that it is important to be a Christian witness at all times. But yelling at the r...

VfoQmnd OctoScr28 1993 features 5 The Great Adventure Dr. Dan Cooper Foreign studies usually means that you have to go to a foreign country toengagein your studies. However an occasional opportunity comes along when a "foreign study" comes here. Such will be the case on Tuesday November 16 when the famous Russian poet Yevgency Yevtushenko will again visit our campus and represent his poetry in a most unique way. If you were fortunate to have gotten a standing room only place in the Johnson Building Multipurpose Room the last time he was here you remember the electrifying manner that we were all enter- tained and enlightened. Yevtushenko is one of the most colorful figures in the liter- ary world and considered by many to be the most prominent writer to ever visit the Forty Acres. Not only is he a poet but a novelist a film director and actor as well. He is also known as a strong advocate of free speech and religion. 8 Arts & "Entertainment Jen & Zim: Jones Tackles The Reality Of Mental Illness A TriStar Pictures Release $sfr.aneff Steve Zimmer: Gere Shines In Jones Richard Gere is well ac- claimed and the fact that he is an effective actor is" certainly no sur- prise to film enthusiasts. This fact is further reinforced by his performence in Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones is a contemporary piece about a man facing the dif- ficulty of living with a manic- depressive condition. He has a long history of trips to mental institutions and a litany of pre- scribed drugs. After a foiled suicide attempt at a construction site he is work- ingon.heis taken to another men- tal hospital This time however his lifeline crosses paths with a female doctor played by Lena Olin who takes great interest in his case.
