MAROONDAH HIGHWAY LEAGUE [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 26 May 1950

MAROONDAH ? I HIGlWA Y LEAGUE Alexandra Defeat Bonnie Doon. In a game which was played in ideal conditions, ?Bonnie Doon were given a taste of what other teams will be expecting when they come up against this fast young sie who are now confident of playing in the grand final this season, namely, Alexandra Sec onds. Alexandra were slow getting into their stride, while Doon played good systematic football through accurate stab kicking and good handball which helped them to gain a lead in the first quarter, viz:-Doon 2-3, Alexan dra 0-4. Right from the bell in the sec ond: term Alexandra dominated the play. The forwards attacked with great zest, and it was at this stage where Alexandra gained their lead. Doon seemed to lose all form and Alexandra slammed on six goals straight while Doon only kicked 1-1. Half time scores Alexandra 6-7, Doon 3-4. The third term opened with Doon fighting to stay within striking distance of the Alexan dra score, but Alexandra still playing good football in...

OBITUARY Mr. FREDK. ACKERMAN. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 26 May 1950

OBITUARY Mr. FREDK. ACKERMAN. A fine athlete and gentleman has been lost to the district through the recent death of Mr. Frederick Acker man, of Marysville, and tribute to the high esteem in which deceased was held was made manifest at the funeral at the Marysville cemetery, the cortege being the largest seen in the locality. Besides having been an active mem ber of the Marysville Cricket Club, in his long residence in the district de ceased served in many capacities with commendable community spirit. His organising ability was above the or dinary, and many local bodies had ex perience of this, as he acted as secre tary to quite a few. His sporting prowess, too, gained him many admir ers. Fairly recently he was to have gone to Melbourne to have a trial run r. with the Essendon Football Club, but he became involved in a motor acci dent. He did not recover from the effects of this, and passed away in Melbourne several days after the ac cident. The late Mr. Ackerman resided at Marysvil...

Football W.N.E.F. LEAGUE. ALEXANDRA TOPPLE THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 26 May 1950

W.N.E.F. LEAGUE. ALEXANDIRA TOPPLE THORN TON-ACHERON VALLEY. The journey to Thornton by Alexan dra last Saturday was fruitful. In ideal weather for football, a big crowd as sembled to watch the match, and gate takings are stated to have been £70. Until half time the play was of a scrambling nature, and good play was out of the question; but it see-sawed in a manner that promoted interest, even excitement. With a greasy ball, kicking off the ground was resorted to early, and in the opening phase Thornton-Acheron Valley appeared to be playing a shade better than their adversaries. Gordon Long roved well, and was equal to a goal; in fact, for a while he was the dominant figure, being assisted in good measure by team-mate Jack Mahoney, while B. Williamson, in the ruck, was a tower of strength. The visitors were well served by Scheffer, V. Hewitt, J. Boote, Bradley and B. Robinson before the first quarter ended, when the scor ing was even: Thornton-Acheron Valley, 3.3. Alexandra, 3.3. Th...
