MISCETLANEOUS EXTRACTS. The Great Sea Serpent. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 17 March 1849

MISCETLANEOUS EXTRACTS. The Great Sea Serpent. A letter bearing date 11th October has been forwarded to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, by Capt. Peter M'Quhae, of H.M. S. Doialus, lying at the time off Hamoaze, which describes minutely a pas- sing visit from this dreadful monster. It was seen on the 6th August, in lat. 24° 44' S., long. 9J 22 E., not only by the captain, but by several of the officers and crew, whose names he mentions. He describes the head and shoulders as being kept constantly about four feet above the surface of the sea ; fully sixty feet of its length was unused in propelling it, though it went through the water at the rate of twelve or fifteen miles un hour, its diameter was about sixteen inches. It passed the ship so closely, that Captain M'Quhae says, had it been a man of his acquaintance, he could have recognised his features with the naked eye. It was in sight of their glasses for about 20 minutes. It had not fins, but something like the mane of a...

The Irish Rebels. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 17 March 1849

Tlië Irish Rebels. .The Government agreeably to the uni- versal expectation of the public, has deci- ded uppn sparing .the lives of Mr. O'Brien and .the other convicted parties in the late wicked though ridiculous insurrection. It was generally and prpperly felt that there would have been something akin to break- ing a butterfly on the wheel in carrying out the imposing sentence of the law upon criminals who could not have managed their treason more contemptibly had their object been to burlesque rebellion. There ought speedily to be devised new punish- ments for those engaged,in little rebellions, and penalties for the now common crime of Low Treason. The days of Tower-hill are over for them ; it is not such offenders as S. O'Brien and Meagher who ought to be punished in high places, and made more eminent by their fate than they made them- selves by their criminality. The conse- quence of making puerile revolts from the British Crown ought to be as certain and notorious as those of...

The Gallant Exploit of Lieutenant Edwardes. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 17 March 1849

The Gallant Exploit of Lieutenant Edwardes. We have not hitherto given a connected detail of the glorious victory achieved »y this officer, without a single European sol- dier under his command. We now ex- tract the following from Bell's Messen- ger: " Upon the receipt of the last mail we were apprised of the brief, but important fact, that Captain Edwardes, in his pursuit of the Mooltan Moolraj, after effecting a junction with the Bahawulpore troops, had routed his whole army, and had driven it pell mell into the rebels capital. By the Bombay correspondence, with which we are now supplied, we are furnished with the most ample details of this briliant affair. It appears that on the 10th and 11th of June the troops of Captain Edwardes and Colonel Courtlandt, amounting to about 15,000 men, and 10 guns, crossed the Indus and moved southwards. The province of Mooltan, it should be observed, is bounded on the north by the Indus, by the Sutlej on thesouth, and is traversed by the Chenab i...
