Hambledon Coffee. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 4 November 1897

Hambledon Coffee. A visit was recently paid by »'repre- sentative of the POST to the .coffee estate bf Mr B. -Marshall, at Hambledon Plantation, which was leased by him some months ago from the C.S.R. Co. The estate which comprises some 33 acres of ridgy scrub soil under coffee, is one which the late proprietors of Hambledon, Messrs Swallow Bros., intended as a beginning to big .things in the coffee line. Owing to a variety of causes, however, not thu least influential of which was the impending sale of Hambledon to the C.S.ll. Co., the coffee' had been badly neglected at tho time of Mr Marshall's taking it over, and the coffee trees were simply smothered with weeds of all kinds and descriptions. ' This, of course, hardly gave tho coffee trees a fair show, and if the majority are a little backward in development, it is to this cause and tho fact that the pruning was entrusted to the unskilled hands of the Japanese that this must be attri- buted. At the time of the visit not a sign o...

Atkinson' gave an acceptable rendering of "Scots wha hae" which was followed by "Jessie's dream" sung very nicely by Mts W. . Taylor who thoroughly-deserved the applause which awarded 1er < effort. Mr A. Hansen was not too happy in his : cornet solo "Auld Hobin Gray" owing to the fact that he played upon a new instrument with whose vagaries he had not time to make himself thoroughly acquainted. - Miss Lapsley I secured the first encore of t...

" MORNING POST." "Neither by fear nor by favor, but by Truth alone?' Tawt&ay ICotslne, Nov. 4, 1897 SEPARATION AND FEDERA- TION. . ' Has it. ever struck the people of Northern Queensland that the Northern Separation Question is nearly defunct ? With the exception of a melancholy note struck now and again,' by Mr Coote, visitors to Nor- thern Queensland would never know that territorial separation was a few years ago the burning topic of the day. It mayhap that Townsville, where the Separation flag was first unfurled, has had its mouth stopped by judiciously administered sugar plums, or it maybe that the people Ol tnat pari HÍIVU grown weaij .with much protestation and endeavor ; whatever the cause may be the song of the turtle (or the Coote, either] is no more heard in the land. People seem to have drifted into the beliel that Federation will in good time provide the remedy for the abuses sought to be wiped out, and in this be- lief they have calmly fallen to sleep lYet that...
