NOTES FROM ALBANY. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 11 December 1882

NOTES FROM ALBANY. (From our Own CorresnondonO Albany is certainly advancing slowly, but surely. During the last twelve months a numbev of private dwellings have been erected in various Tiarts of tho town. wl,ii« on the main streets several business houses ' small and large, have made their appearance — evidently showing that business is to bo done and money to be made. It is a good sign when strangers from the other colonies and from England see sufficient prospects toinduce them to permanently settle in our midst. During the last month Mr. B. Rose— formerly of Messrs. Padbury, Loton, k. Co.— arrived from England with a lavre consignment of goods, and at once com menced business in tho drapery Hue. He has since been joined by his partner, Mr Withers, with the result that they have leased the splendid!y-si!u;it--d store of Mr Treasure, in York Street, for a number of years, aud have now opened, in addition to the retail trade, the iirst wholesale Imsiuess in the town. Cfte 2Batlp ^etos, MONDAY, DECEMBER^llflSS^ Mr. Fairbairn, the magistrate des patched by direction, of His Excel lency the Govei'nor on special duty to the Murchisonand Gascoyne districts. has found it necessary to take excep tion to certain statements which were published in the West Australian of the 31st October last. There appoar ed in that journal some nine or ten letters from various settlers who com plained that Mr. Fairbairn bad sup pressed statements made to him, and misrepresented facts. The language in which some of these letters is couch ed is in some cases reprehensible, con demnatory of his conduct, and calcu lated to excite general disapprobation. The hypercritical editor of the journal in question, in its issue of Friday last. publishes Mr. Fairbairn's letter *in re Aj, which appeared in the Govern ment Gazette, and in a paragraph says, ' the- settlers have been complaining, ' not of the full evidence which be took ' down, but of the nature of the ' epitome of it whi...
