Doings at Clayton. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 10 October 1914

.ala.s at Clayton. What might be rightly termed a "red letter" night in Clayton, eventuated in the Tennis Hall on Saturday evening last, the occasion being a "kitchen tea," arranged by the ladies of the district, to do honor to Miss Rose Murphy, prior to her marriage to Mr Tom Hill, of Clarinda. The esteem in which Miss Murphy is held by the resi dents of the district was evidenced by the large crowd present; fully 100 conlea narticinated in the function, which was marked by much jollity and mirth. Proceed ings opened by the company, com prising both young -ud old (who were evidently out for a nigh'nt's enjoyment) entering merrily into the fascinations of the dance, the music for same being supplied by Miss Brooks, assisted by Miss M. Armstrong. A striking feature of the evening was the dexterous manner in which the older folk tripped the " light fantastic," showing their younger sisters and brothers a lesson in this respect. Later in the evening Mr Arthur Dixon arranged an artistic...

Our Letter Box. WORKING OF THE SHIRE OF MULGRAVE. To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 10 October 1914

Our Letter Box. WORKING OF.THE SHIRE OF MULGRAVE. To the Editor. Slr,-I see by your report of the 19th. September that Cr Coleman wants to do away with our Inspec tor. I. like other ratepayers of the north riding, want to know his motive. Is it that the Inspector is too much alive for the Shire of Mulgrave? or perhaps he wants to make him a special constable for the season. Since Mr F. Wilson has been appointed he has shown the ratepayers that the council made a step in the right direction. The roads in our shire, with hedge and furze, were a disgrace to any minicipality. To-day any lady can walk along the road and see well ahead, and not be seized from behind a cluster of acacia; coun cillors of Dandenong and Moorab bin have congratulated him on the work done, and a councillor of Nunawading wants to know why their Inspector has not done so well as ours in collecting the dog rates. Our inspector stayed with and sheeted the Ferntree Gully road with all its metal, and Dan denong road,...

The Convent Bazaar. Wednesday next, October 14. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 10 October 1914

The Convent Bazaar. Wednesday next, October 14. The attention of the tesidents of Oakleigh and stirroundiug districts is particularly drawn to the fact that on Wednesday next, 14th inst., a grand bazaar and art union. in aid of the Convent of the Good Shepherd, Oakleigh, will be opened at 3.30 p.m. by His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr T. J. Carr). It will remain open from the 14th to the 19th inclusive, Sunday of course excepted, every afternoon and evening. Everyone in and around Oak leigh is conversant, to a greater or lesser extent, with the admirable and self-denying work carried on by the Sisters. The addition of extensive dormitories. etc., to the building and installation of new machinery in the laundry depart ment entailed a large expenditure, and it is hoped that this effort will greatly reduce, if not extinguish, the debt resting upon the institu tion, A large comimittee of ladies and gentlemen, with Mrs Considine as President, Px Westley as hon sec retary, and Mr ...

Spring Racing Carnival By "Barrier" [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 17 October 1914

Spring Racing Carnival By "Barrier" Uncle Sam has stood his pre paration at headquarters for the big mile and a half event to be run at Caulfield this afternoon. The son of United States--Melly, should play an important part when the whips are cracking. The candidates most spoken of for the big e;ent at the 'heath" yesterday were Anna Carlovna and St. Carwyne, while Uncle Sam, C-arlin, AIconner, and Mirabilite were also mentioned. The field has been reduced to 20 by the scratching of Winston, and if all goes well\the number mentioned will go to the post, There were 23 starters last year when Aurifer was successful. It is surprising to see Eubulus an acceptor for the Caulfield Cup after his recent bad form, but it would not be surprising if he were a rod in pickle. Oakleigh Convent Bazaar [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 17 October 1914

Oakleigh Convenit Bazaar On Wednesday afternoon a large and representative gathering as sembled in the Mechanics' IHall to witness the opening of the bazaar in aid of the Building Fund of the Convent of the Good Shepherd. The weather, although threatening rain, was fine. The Rev Fr. Quinn, P.P., read apologies from the Lord Mayor of Melbourne and Mr W. S. Keast, M.L.A., and said they were all pleased to see His Grace the Archbishop (Dr Carr), who had attended to open the bazaar. He was not only a leader in the church but a sympathetic friend, large hearted and generous. For ;the past 28 years he had opened many bazaars, churches, schools-and his pocket. (Ap plause) On that account he was very popular with the ladies, and he hoped all present would follow his example. (AppIause) The Archbishop said he was de lighted to find such a large and re presentative gathering at such an hour, which augured well for the success of the bazaar during its continuance. It was not the first he had o...
