The Pioneer. SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 1968. THE TRUST AND THE GOVERNMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 14 March 1896

C!}c |3tonm\ SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 1968. THE TRUST AND THE GOVERNMENT. Now that the liquidators of Messrs. Chaffey Bros., Limited, have practical ly thrown up the con tract for pumping be tween the Renmark Irri gation Trust, No. 1, and that firm, inrhich was to have continued for fif teen years, it behoves the Trust as soon as possible to put the pumping plant and irrigation channels in a thoroughly efficient state. The mem bers of this, Renmark's only legalised corporate body, are fully alive to the importance of the work being carried out with as little delay as possible. To do so, however, requires consider able funds, and having no capital be yond the irrigation works and the power of levying rates, it is indispen sable that they shall go to Rome out side source for the necessary money. It was at first thought that it could be obtained under the State Advances Bill, but as the Renmark Irrigation Trusts Act makes no provision for borrowing money on the security of the rates, there ...

RENMARK PLANTATIONS. THE DERAMORE ESTATE. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 14 March 1896

RlSNMARK PLANTATIONS., Tiik Dkkamohe Estate. ' The estate of the Hon. G. N. de Yarburg Bateson {son and heir of Lord Derail! ore) on llenmark Avenue and Twenty-Eighth Street is worthy of notice. It is generally known as Lord Deramore's Block. It consists of 80 acres of good, stiff soil of light red color, rieh in fertilising properties, and though not so easily worked as the more sandy soil, it is estimated that it will continue to yield good crops, without the addition of fertilisers, when the other land will require fre quent manuring. This, of course, re mains to be proved. At any rate the stiffer land requires more frequent cul tivation. About 60 acres of this area were planted with Gordo Blanco viues three and a half years ago, and most of them have done well, showing vigorous growth, suitable pruning and every «are and attention in cultivation. The method of pruning adopted in this vineyard is the same as that generally approved of in Renmark, and certainly the results are mor...

FRUIT WRAPPING MACHINE. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 21 March 1896

FRUIT "WRAPPING MACHINE. The following correspondence in the 1 rural Sew Yorker may be interest ing- to some of our fruit growers : — " The first letter is from Mr. Gillet to Mr. F. 11. O.sborn, a Florida orange grower:—' A discussion has arisen I about orange wrapping machines. It was started by mv suggesting the use of them for wrapping fancy apples or peaches. The statement was made that the machine was not practicable ; that it requires so much attention and | " tinkering " to keep it working that nothing is gained over hand wrapping. Illy knowledge of the wrapper was j derived wholly from seeing yours at work, in your packing house, in Janu ary, 1893. If you will kindly inform me what you think or the machine now, after your experience with it, how long you have used it, and where it can be obtained, cost, &c., and whether yon think it would work suc cessfully with apples, peaches, pears and quinces, you will grately oblige me and confer a favour on several northern fru...

THE OONSHIU ORANGE. WORTHY OF ATTENTION. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 21 March 1896

THE OONSHIU ORANGE. ■WOHTHY OF ATTENTION. The move we are able to learn about the Oonshiu orange, wliich Mr. r Skene used to call tlif- Satsuma, the more convinced, are we of its merits. The trees of this variety which Mr. E. W. Burbury imported from Japan, should be in great request this autumn. The Oonshiu, it is claimed, will safely withstand 16 degrees of frost. A, California grower, who tested it, thus gives his cxpcrience : — " After we had planted our trees and when they wore coming into leaf, we had quite a severe frost, which killed the foliage on the walnut trees, but not a leaf was injured on the seed less Oonshiu orange trees, although the leaves were very young and tender. The Oonshiu orange is the crowning, effort of Japanese horticuture. They have spent hundreds of years in per fecting it, and at lust produced an orange that would flourish throughout their empire; an orange that was seedless, of fine and delicious flavor, and an early and abundant bearer."— Cidtivatui...

THE STOCKMAN'S LAMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 21 March 1896

THE STOCKMAN'S LAMENT. Wo were travelling stock from Uie station. The weather so hot that yoif'd think-, You would give anything in creation Just to get something cooling to drink. For the plain was parched as a, sandslip. And the water was brackish, yon hot, When we saw in the distance a township. And thought we'd the chance of a wet. So the stock we just left with the nigger, While gaiiv we made for the town. When we asked for the pub they did snigger, And said we were done nicely brown. For if Remuavk groggies don't know you, Why, you can't get a drink in the place, So quickly the door they will show you, And you must get a barrel or case. Weil, its hard on a fellow that's steady, And don't want to drink by the tub, •Tolind, though his cash is all ready, That he can't get a drink in a pub. And as for talking of tempera nee, There is nothing of that in the show, You can drink to your very last tenpence, When .you once get to be in the know. Then Badly we turned to the cattle, And ...
