AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE EARLY DAYS. CHAPTER V.—Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 10 January 1906

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE E^iiSljir ZD^-TTS. By CHARLES WHITE. Chapteu V. — Continued. But the bushranger had done his work before they arrived on the. scene, and it is not likely Hint they would have interfered had they ar rived in time, seeing that they were all 'now chums.' and altbeclher ignorant of English. The Chinese in those days were frequently to be met with 'travelling in hordes; they trotted along the road in single file, with huge mushroom hats, baggy trousers and sandals of every conceivable pattern, balanc ing their basket-poles on their shoulders and jabbering cheerfully to each other as they jogged. Passing this crowd of goldhun ters, the driver tooled his team to the toll-bar on the road, about a mile distant, where information of the robbery was given to the keeper, Mr. Shepherd, and then the coach proceeded on its way to Hartley, where there was a police station. Several mounted troopers happened to be at Hartley at the time, and Andill conducted them to the sp...

ANOTHER FRIEDMAN CASE. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 10 January 1906

ANOTHER FRIEDMAN CASE. Tub Leadeu would like to know what part the Attorney-General has had in connection with the inter ference with the jury's verdict in the Millard case. It will be re membered that, when, acting on the recommendation of Judge Ro gers, the Attorney-General in the See Ministry took it upon himself to over-ride the jury's decision in the Friedman 'case, none were so loud in their denunciation of : that unwarrantable piece of business as were the members of the present Cabinet. But, acting (as the See Government did) on the recom mendation of the presiding judge, the Carruthers' Government have done exactly what they condemned the See Government for doing— and they have done it on behalf of a member of their own party, tho loss of whose vote would jeopardise their existence as a Government! With the guilt or otherwise of Mr. Millard wo aro not just now concerned. The jury have already decided that matter, and now that the judge's report has been sent in, his case ca...

THE EXTRADITION OF W. N. WILLIS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 10 January 1906

THE EXTRADITION OF W. N- WILLIS. The effect of the latest Govern ment announcement with roped to t!ic return of W. N. Willis is that it lias been postponed indefinitely. Some months ago, after numerous delays, wo were told that he might be expected back about the middle of December last, ' but it' is' now. January, and there are no signs of the interesting traveller. Instead of that, there comes the news that he has entered upon further legal proceedings calculated to delay matters till at least February, aftcv which, in case he should fail on an appeal to the Full Court, which will then be in session, he may go to the Privy Council. This stage, we arc cheerfully informed, could not be reached before the end of March, though how .long after that it might take no one can say. And when the case did get there, the date at which the decision of the Privy Council might be ex pected is equally uncertain. What it all means, therefore, is that any person charged with an offence in a part of...

THEY SAY: [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 10 January 1906

THEY SAY: That if the Jllawarra dbtrict is rightly described us the South Coast, Bega should be known as the 'most soulhest const.' That somebody from ; Nubba writes to the 'D.T.' to know what to do with u deformed colt which is described as very much out of shape,; and That the 'D.T.' thinks that 'from the details 8upplied_ nothing can be done for the colt'— ryes there can, the 'Budget' recom mends it be pole-axed. That dining the Xmas holidays the Sydney servant girls all went out for a jaunt and left the 'missus and the kids' to come in from the 'drorin-room' and peal spuds' and get their own dinner ready. That if Dcakin could have pre cipitated a general election just at the time England was engaged in a tussle over the fiscal question his his party would have gained many adherents ; and That it must come as a severe shock to farmer Hodge to have his frcelrh.de ' fetish assailed in the slightest degree.
