Riot in Jerusalem. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 7 January 1898

Riot in Jerusalem. At length the 'mission question' has broken out in a most acute form. Recently the Chacham Bashi and other rabbonim placed the missions, and their auxiliaries, the mission hospitals in Cherem. Generally, this interdict was carried out and the B'nei Israel Society helped in agitating against the missions- A week ago, however, a Spanish Jewess went ..to the English mission hospital, although she was aware that the Cherem extended to a corpse She died in the hospital on Hash ana Rabbo* and preparations were made for her funeral' which was to take place at the close of Simchas Torah, which we celebrate on Sbemeni Atzerth On the news of her death spreading, the Jews immediately prote-ted against the body of de ceased being buried in the Jewish cemetery, and the Oacham Bashi informed Selim Effendi the Mayor, and although he would have liked to withdraw the Cherem against, the body, such a course, owing to the state of public feel ing on the continuance of the missions, ...

Sir Saul Samuel, K.C.M.G., C.B. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 7 January 1898

Sir Saul Samuel, K.C.M.G., C.B. Sir Saul Samuel K.C.M.G., C.B. e , has just been created a Baronet. At a recent public function the Jewish Chronicle credits the Colonial Secretary, Mr. Chamberlain, with say ing that he desired to take that opportunity of placing on record his high appreciation of the unfailing courtesy and tact which have charac terised Sir Saul Samuel's intercourse with the department, and of the zeal which he lias invariably displayed in promoting those cordial relations between the mother country and the colonies, which are equally important to both. The Secretary of State adds that he has observed with satisfaction that the ability and efficiency with which Sir Saul Samuel has dis ? charged the weighty responsibilities of the post which he has held for so many years, are as highly estimated by the colony as by Her Majesty's Government. Sir Saul Samuel has for upwards of half a century rendered distinguished services to the Colony of New South Wales. Born in 1820...

Job is the Prototype of Israel. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 7 January 1898

Job is the Prototype of Israel. The masterpiece in the world's poetical literature is that sublime epos known as the Book of Job. It is placed in the Canon after Psalms, which contains the theology of the ancient Israel ; and after Proverbs which interprets the ethics of that theology ; and represents the apologetics of this theology and this ethics. The ideal doctrines, beliefs and hopes expressed in the two former books are placed in juxtaposition with real life and its numerous vicissitudes. The Book of Job is a complete work of art. It is the hexameter of the ancient Hebrew, interspersed with lyric couplets, which runs uniformly through the whole book with the ex ception of the two introductory and the one closing chapter. It could not possibly have been spoken by Job and his friends as it is before us, as the poet's? masterly hand is visible in every line throughout the book. This ap pears also to be evident from the fact, that the book begins with an allegory in heaven. The So...

OBITUARY. Mrs. Mark Barnett. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 7 January 1898

OBITUARY. Mrs. Mark Barnett. Mrs. Mark Barnett's sudden death at the re union of the N. S. W. Savage Club (held at Sans Souci) on Sunday last, was a painfully distressing ending to the anticipated pleasure of the clay. When death waits on us, there is usually[some warning, some illness or an unfor tunate circumstance to herald its approach, but when, as m the case of Mrs. Barnett, we ar'e ust erect from the mifet of the preparation for enjoyment into the presence of God, makes us feel our frailty, and value the adage, '' In the midst of life, we are in death,1' Before detailing the career' of a life which in its sphere of action became a blessing to manypoor and deserving people whom others in their anxious wish to bestow charity failed to personally seek out and benefit, we offer our sincere sympathy to Mr Mark Barnett on the appalling termina tion o the life of his help -meet, to whom he was so devotedly attached ; the other members of the family share in our con dolence, but with...

SOUTH AFRICA. ? : ? ♦ ? — .. . . ... ? ? JOHANNESBURG. The 'Rev. Harris Isaacs, preaching at the Synagogue of the Johannesburg Congregation, spoke out very plainly on a matter of local importance on the first day of the New Tear. He said that the sentiment had been expressed only against a gectjon. of the Jews, and a suggestion had gone forth to keep a certain class of Jews out of the country. They must not forget that this was but the thin end of the wedge, and 'that once they allowed oppressive measures to be taken against any of their race, the exclusion of the whole race would follow. ' .'For the first time in the history of the Transvaal,' said the preacher, ' Divine Service will be held in the gaol this year. Our race always pride...
