'Ittin 'Arry ' Ard [Newspaper Article] — Mirror — 4 June 1921

HtiiAniArt 'The Mirror' doesn't intend to give special attention *p. nasty do ings in Divorce. It has other things to do than groping through t^e odious details of the Divorce Court. It would, however, be failing in its duty to the public if it did not no tice the Taylor case, which for seve ral days occupied the attention of Chief Justice McMillen/ and which was concluded by the scathing judg ment given by his Honour on Wed nesday morning. There are features in the case so lurid that they com pel comment. So bad was it that hjs Honour characterised it as the worst case in his experience. The three people concerned in the case were in his Honour's opinion thoroughly immoral. So shiftable and unfaithful was the petitioner in his affections that Sir Robert Mc Millen could find only one term to fit his infidelities — he was a philan derer. As to Taylor's relations with other women, the learned Judge could only say that they were so numerous that his. mind had been in confusion, and he ...

"Economy" [Newspaper Article] — Mirror — 4 June 1921

'ECMMM' 'Dido': There is a heap of talk these days about 'Economy,!' For quite a long while, no one has been game to stand for Parliament with out starring 'Economy.' It is. true that the clamant call for Economy is still followed relentlessly by the suggestion that so many millions should .be spent to 'develop our la tent natural resources.' Still .Eco nomy is slowly displacing even ,'the necessity for developing our marvel lous potentialities; while our ''won- derful recuperating power' has slip ped quite into the background. Most of us owe money in many ways, viz., privately, and in our municipal, State and Commonwealth aspects, and in the three communal capacities we make no effort to pay off any of the principal. God help us if we try the same idea privately. The municipality has raised rates, and the Governments have raised the taxes, without any pretence of an effort to reduce their debts. The position is serious. The State is going further and further behind; but who can say...

Ruth's Creed [Newspaper Article] — Mirror — 4 June 1921

Rail's creel 'M': The triumph of faith is to believe the apparently incredible. Rev. T. E. Ruth., of Melbourne, is in no danger of the sin of Thomas. The reverend gentleman has proposed an Australian Creed — which, be it re marked, meets with the approval of that pommy istic journal known as the 'Daily Xews.' 'I believe,' says Ruth, 'in the Commonwealth of Aus tralia. I believe in its free, equal and democratic constitution, provid ing protection for life, liberty, ana labour, adapted and adaptable to the needs of a growing people.' This is rich. Ruth, a clergyman, whose business it is to know and to teach things spiritual, takes a half hour excursion into the realm of po Jitics — and finds that all is just as well as can possibly be in this best of all possible worlds. Curiously enough, the halfhour hi chooses for his excursion happens to be the identical half-hour wherein the men whose business it is to know and to teach things political — the politicians and political students — ...

SYDNEY TRAGEDY. [Newspaper Article] — Mirror — 4 June 1921

SYDNEY TRAGEDY. SYDNEY, Saturday.— The N.S.W. Crown Law Department have decided that no further proceedings will be taken against Major Thomas Butler, the laborite, who, besides having to serve seven years hard labour, had been remanded to stand his trial on a second charge of murder in connec tion with tie Mossyale tragedy of De cember 17th. last, in which his young wife was shot dead. ,' Tommy Foy, the well-known trot ting man, won a tenner last Satur day night over this paper. It seems some bettor threw out a challenge that a complete issue with the re sults of the last trotting race could not be purchased by those coming back in the trams from'the Trotting Meeting last Saturday night. Temp tuous Tommy buzzed around and dug up his witnesses, and was able to land the wager. As a matter of fact 'The Mirror' had the result and was printing before the horse*; turned around o be paraded before the judge.
