THE WESTERN RAILWAY ACT. To the Editor of the Courier. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 18 December 1875

THE WESTERN RAILWAY ACT. I To the Editor of the Courier. Sir,—The utterances of Ministers in the House, or "during a recess, to their constituents, have very properly a weight-.which does not attach to the speeches of other members of Parliament. When, therefore, the Postmaster-General—the mouthpiece of the Ministry in the Upper House —assured members that it was not the intention of the Ministry to make any immediate resump tions on.a large scale within the area resumed by schedule for purposes of the Bail way Act, the gentlemen of that Chamberaceepted his assurance, and allowed the bill , to pass without amendment. Lessees within the. reserve also/accepted this " assurance," and looked for such resumptions only as would test the buying power of the pub lic at auction. ' This was the legitimate outcome of the bill, and we could not have complained; but we now find notices have been sent to lessees, under poorer of. clause 55 of the Pastoral Leases Act, of resump tions wholesale,- a...

ST. GEORGE. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 18 December 1875

ST. GEORGE. fFBOM OTJK OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 j A petition is about to be got up to the Go vernment for coach coimnunication between here jand Dalby, and, as it is one of our most urgent requirements, it is likely to find favour with the j "powers that be" if the people are only reason ! able enough to keep within the bounds of mode ] ration in their demands. A petition was got up for the same object some time ago, and the Go vernment entertained the idea of giving a "branch line from Morabie via Surat; but an agitation was pot up against the branch line, and a direct line via the Moonie was asked for, or no line at alL Of course the Government would not sub mit to dictation, and the matter fell through, I suppose the majority of the people don't care a cent which way the coach goes so long as they get one. An awful whirlwind passed through the town on last Saturday, which very fortunately was rather erratic in its movements, and, beyond partially unroofing a few buildings covered wit...

The Western Star. ROMA, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 18 December 1875

Wiatm jfe. ROMA, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1875. It is but a poor consolation, to those who are •anxious to select land in this neighbourhood to know' that the area available for selection cannot be increased until the next session of Parliament has lasted sixty days. ' The whole of the Town Reserve, with the exception of a small area near aneighbouring head station, has been thrown open, and the selection of all of it that is considered suitable has caused the present dearth. It is unquestionable that a strong demand ibr l^timate gelection exists, and that there is at the presenttime no land to satisfy it; it is equally certain that the Government is pojag&fess in the matter pend ing further resumption, which cannot take place until due notice has been gu/jen. to the lessees, and & schedule of the lands proposed to be resumed has been laid upon the 3able of the House during session.for sixty days. Notice has been given to the lessees of all tire runs in this district w...

THE MEASLES. (From Dr. Fullerton's Family Medical Guide.) [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 18 December 1875

THE MEASLES (From Dr. FuUertmZs Family ^Medical Guide.) I [We published the following extract some months ago, but as the measles are now spread ing all over the district we thought it inight be 'useful to our country readers if we re-printed them. Whenever it is practicable, - however, a medical man should be called in at the" first ap pearance of ihedisease.] . . This is an infectious fever, affecting Che' skin and also the mucous m embrane, especially that of the eyes, nostrils, throat, and air-tubes. This disease is met with chiefly in youth, but it may occur in advanced age. It is one of those diseases to which, as a rule, we are subject once, only during life ; but to this exceptions occur occasionally, and we. meet with patients having measles who are reported to have suffered from j it before. But as the first attack had not been seen by me in any of these eases I allude to, and as they were said to be very mild, without cough or weakness of the eyes,' it seemed possible tha...
