LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. HEIDELBERG WORKERS. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 31 March 1917

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. HEIDELBERG WORKERS. Sir,-In your last issue a reference apipeared in an account of a Heidelberg meeting of the Red Cross workers carry. ing out thescompletion of a house for the widow or a soldier. I feel sure some lit tle explanation is necessary. On being interviewed some time ago by delegates from the Ivanhoe Soldiers' Welfare League. who intimated that this work re quired to be clone, the members of the Voluntary Workers' Association present at once volunteered to carry it out. I menlitioned the matter to Mr E. Rouch, our trc.isurer, and he stated that, as tihe soldier in question had it one timne work edl foi hisi irLr, he thought that some of his'employees would desire to complete thecottage. Thisis how the matter now sgands; and I understand that Mr Rouch, on behalf of his employees, is making arrangements to carry out whatever work is necessary, and is in communice. tiorn iith the Stato \'ar Counlcil, w|hich bod s;siipnlies the ti'nber, &. The officers and members of the Fairfield Church felt they could not let him go away without presenting him with some token of their ap preciation of the manner he had carried out the work of the church during the two years he had been with them, and to that end gave him a farewell social and presuent ed him with a valuable gold watch, on MIon day evening last; in the church. RECRUITING CAMPAIGN. BIG MEETING AT IVANHOE. The adjourned recruiting meeting, held in the Ivanhoe Hall on Monday evening, was all that could be hoped for ; there was not a spare seat left; people stood in rows at the back, and when boys got sqeezed out they climbed up on the win dows. Scores of people came late, and could not get in. The Royal Park Band marched through the street, and their fine playing attract ed a deal of attention. They also played a number of selections in the hall. Cr Bryant presided, and said it was gratifying to see such a large audience, which was sure proof of the success of the win-the-war movement. An apology was read from the shire president. Mr Reg. Kelly said that this district had done well, but there are a few elig ibles left, and they are hard to get. Those who are eligible are from 18 to 45, married or single, and he had yet to learn that married men should be exempt from fighting for their loved ones, and look to boys of 18 to do it for them.
