We reprint the following from the March number of 'The Journal for Agriculture" : A particularly fine samplo of lucerne from the third cut was recently f-twarded to the Director of Agriculture by Mr if. Wight man, of Thornton, who has supplied the followino details regarding the crop which was grown without irigation : " iJhe sample of lucerne I sent you is from a plot of two acres sown in Novembher, 1906, as an experiment. The spring of that year was very wet and suited the late sowing. The aniount of seed per acre was from 17 to 2D0lb, which I think is rather heavy as the crop has a tendency to lie down in places, the soil being very rich. Tne Chinese invasion of Australia, though peaceful, still continues, and the authorities are hard put to it to find excuses why it is so, and they have re-doubled their vigilance and efforts to put a stop to it. Usually, Sydney is the head quarters of the Chinese immnigrant, but recently there was to havoe landed in Melbourne by the steamship Orange River, a con signment of some 60 Chinese and .i00 tins of opium. The chief officer of the boat, however, discovered some 13 of them in a small space in the Chirte o quarters of the vessel. They were' described as being in a dreadful state ' of emaciation, and their bodies were covered with sores. They were dis covered on the way from Hong Kong to Japan, and were sent back to China.
