MINING. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 10 November 1888

MINING. THE MUTOOBOO.-The special corres pondent of the Terowie Enterprise says: -The mine is within one mile of Cock burn, and at the present time there are over fifty men at work. They receive provisions and all stores chiefly from Messrs Woods & Co., of Ceckburn, who do a large business on the field. The Mutooroo started in January last. There are four eighty acre blocks, and 50,000 shares in the mine, of which 30,000 are promoters, paid up to 15s per share, and 20,000 contributors paid up to 10s per share. They had a credit when they started operations of something like £2,000, and should have now about £3,000. Shafts are sunk, one on the South Block, to a depth of 140 feet, and another on the Sorth Block called the Iron Blow Shaft, a depth of 160 feet. The lode in this shaft is 12 feet wide, and the footwall has not yet been met with, Oeboroe's shaft is down to a depth of 90 feet, and in this shaft a cross-cut has been put in, from which enough ore is being raised in on...

PORT GERMEIN. November 6, 1888. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 10 November 1888

POBT GERMEIN. November 6, 1888. My long absence from the columns of your mucb esteemed paper, has not arisen from any lack of interest in the neighbor hood in which I reside, or from any indifference to the claims of the numer ous readers of the Times, but from the fact that agricultural prospects of this district have been anything but hopeful. .Now, however, that the harvest has come there is no reason that the facts should be withheld. Having had only about 5 inches of rain for the year the fact of a comparative failure of the crops will be clearly understood. There are hundreds of acres into which a machine will not be taken, while there are hun dreds from which, after mush toil, the seed can only be obtained, and the remaining portion may yield from two to five bushels per acre. It is not in the light (or rather darkness) of a pessimist, when I state the average yield of the land sown in the Hundred of Baroota to be below two bushels per acre. Telowie as a hundred is better, es...
