The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors est. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, MAHCH 17. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 March 1880

Vita tine lUerit mart at. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, MAHCH 17. THERE seems to be some intention on the part of tlie Government to refuse the petition for the incorporation of Blaokall. No official intimation Las been received that such a course is intended, but from rumours which bavc rcaclied us it would appear tbat the Colonial Secretary has a refusal in con templation. It ccrtaiuly appears as if the Government were opposed to any section of the community availing them selves of local government, otherwise than as provided in the Divisional Boards Act, and if not directly would indirectly endeavour to force the latter upon them. To accomplish this end it will be observed that of the eleven mem bers and auditors who have been appointed by tbe Government to com pose the first Kargoolnah Board, four are residents of Blackall, whereas only one has been chosen from Tambo. Having appointed these gentlemen the Colonial Secretary waits the issue of events, and leaves it for the newly gazetted m...

ODDS AND ENDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 March 1880

ODDS AND ENDS. I B? ECNOUOO. IT is a custom widespread as the English language for writers to amplify in varied fashions on the theme that heralded the birth of Christianity. I nm not afraid of being arraigned at the bar of public opinion, or at least of GO much of it as concerns itself with the affairs of this remote dependency of the British Empire, for the one marked cx» ception w applying the maxim, extend "good will to all men " except Kanakas. I tee the working class, "the bone and sinew of the country," lifts token up and has determined to persist in nn unflinching resistance to the introduction of Kanaka labor. The feeling on the subject by this majority of Queens laud colonists, Bpriugs from no ignoble source, 110 irrational race jealousy, or ignorant pre* judice. Thews baser motives uiay help to increase the volume of the sentiment, just as numtars of trickliug rills fall into and swell the current of the stream, which nevertheless takes its rise from a distinct and more e...
