AH ^ toaayte [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 May 1914

AH ^ toaayte Prepare Before Planting The temptation to seed into poorly prepared soil will be great this season because the continued rains during February delayed plowing more than usual . Under such circumstances there is a very great temptation to prepare the seed bed only in part , hoping to get the seed into the ground promptly and intending later on to go over the ground again and finish breaking . This is not a wise method . It is next to impossible to thoroughly prepare soil after planting , and it is seldom that farmers are able to get back to this task before the roots of the plants have extended so far into the middles that such work is PREPARING THE SEED-BED bound to cause more or less root injury . So it is advisable , even should it delay planting to make haste slowly by preparing the soil thoroughly beforehand . It must be remembered that it is always preferable to plant upon firm soil rather than to have a loose seed bed . When the seed bed has just been prepared and...

ORCHARD I AND GARDEN [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 May 1914

ORCHARD I AND GARDEN Cultivation Vs . Sod Mulch R . B . Cruickshank , Ohio College of Afri . Where clean cultivation with a cover crop system is used in an orchard the ground should be plowed and put into condition as soon as it can be worked . Cultivation should be frequent throughout the spring and early summer , and especially it should follow rains . This will create a dust mulch or blanket which will prevent evaporation to a large extent . Cultivation is generally stopped about the middle of July to give the trees time to ripen their wood and mature their fruit and allow of a cover crop beingssown . The cover crop is used for various reasons . Frequent tillage burns up the organic or vegetable matter in the soil , ana thus decreases the humus content . Orchard soils need humus . The cover crop returns this humus-making material to the soil when it is plowed un AN ORCHARD UNDER CULTIVATION der the following spring . The cover crop also takes up surplus moisture , holds over wint...

pom [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 May 1914

pom The first Feeding of Brooder Chicks Careful feeding of the young chicks at the start is of more importance than at any other period in their life . The yolk of the egg which is absorbed by the young chicks just before emerging from the shell supplies the necessary food during the first forty-eight hours of its life . The first requirement of the young chick is grit to aid in digestion and pure water . Small grains of sharp sand or pieces of egg shell are splendid for this purpose . Hard boiled eggs , thoroughly mixed with bread crumbs mois A Row of Gasoline Brooders tened in milk can be used the third and fourth days . Fine oatmeal can be gradually added to this mixture and fed sparingly at periods two or three hours apart . A simple ration for chicks a week or more old may be made of two parts by weight of finely cracked corn , one part of broken wheat , one part oatmeal and one part of meat scraps . Whole wheat can be substituted when the chicks arrive at six weeks of age . Gr...
