AMERICAN FARM ANIMALS .-NO . 13 . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

AMERICAN FARM ANIMALS .-NO . 13 . IMPORTATION AS TEST 0 ? V ^ LI ^ E . - ^ Cofad Tiie wfeter has seen as inferior hailcs , cattle and pigs in Great Britain as lie has seen in America . Even in thc Channel Islands , although all the cattle may bu counted as pure bred , a good proportion arc of decidedly inferior quality . In 1879 , at thc leading agricultural shows , he saw prize winners of a considerable number of breeds , of cattle , horses , sheep and pigs , for which only short pedigrees could be given ; in a good number of cases , no pedigrees whatever . In view of these facts and of the additional fact that importing fine stock has proved a profitable business in many cases , it is a mistake to attach special importance to importation . Of most of the more popular breeds there arc now enough in America to allow sufficient choice , and of nearly all these breeds we have specimens nearly or quite equal to the best in the countries in which they originated . As an illustration the...

THE POULTRY YARD [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

THE POULTRY YARD ered crops is plenty . The cost of keeping is comparatively nothing and disease is unknown among fowls so kept . MILK FOR FATTENING FOWLS . —To enable one to fatten fowls or chicks quickly , it is absolutely necessary to give such food as will accomplish the purpose best , and to this end we unhesitatingly recommend plenty of milk in any state , from fresh to thick . This should be fed in connection with a grain diet , for one counteracts any possible deleterious influence of the other . If kept in a darkened place and fed unsparingly on milk , with grain in proper proportions , you will soon have something very choice to offer up on your tables to your friends , as well as to your family . When milk is fed , no water is required for fattening fowls . —American Poultry Yard . Engraving received ; think it elegant . C . W . ALLISON , Milledgeville , 111 . THE DAIRY . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

THE DAIRY . PRESSING CHEESE . TIICFABMEKS REVIEW is under obligations to lt . P . McGlincy , Esq ., Secretary , for a copy of thc 14 th Annual Report of the Northwestern Dairymen s Association , ¦ with addresses and discussions at the annual meeting at Harvard , 111 ., February 10-12 , 1880 . The book contains many interesting papers , too long for publication entire in our columns , but from which we shall make extracts now and then . Here are some suggestions on the pressing and care of cheese that are important . They are from n paper on Practical Cheese Making , by Robert McAdam , of Rome , N . Y .: The pressing of cheese is a point which does not receive the care and attention necessary to form a firm , solid and handfcDinc cheese . Most makers seem to aim itt nothing higher than a . passable aticle . This is a great error . The highest excellence in every point ought to be the aim of every cheese maker . Each separate cheese ought to be attended to as if the reputation of the ...

OUR SAMPLE COPIES . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

OUR SAMPLE COPIES . We wish to say a word to all who receive a copy of this edition ot the FARMKKS REVIEW . It is this : You will please bear in mind that in preparing this number of the REVIEW , we have necessarily been somewhat hampered by the very large amount of advertising which has naturally been called out by the enormous number of copies of this particular ediiion , which we are sending to all parts of the United States . We address ourselves now more especially to those who receive this paper as a sample copy . Our regular subscribers know well how attractive each copy of the REVIEW is , and they will readily understand that a special edition of 100 , 000 copies should be more than usually crowded with advertising , but to those who receive a copy of the FARMEBS REVIEW for the first time , we wish to say that , while , as it is , we are confident that this copy will compare very favorably with the best agricultural papers published , still they may , if they will subscribe ...

ENGLISH WOOL COMING TO AMERICA . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

ENGLISH WOOL COMING TO AMERICA . An account of the Liverpool wool sales in March is of considerable interest to wool growers this side of the Atlantic . It is reported that these sales demonstrated the reality of American competition in woolen manufacture in a manner unexpected to English manufacturers . Liverpool is the market for the longer wool , imported and domestic , and here York , shire and other manufacturers periodically assemble to purchase their stocks of the raw material used in the production of worsteds , carpets , blankets , etc . At the late sales , say our advices , brokers acting for American firms bought freely of the supply imported from India . Prices , high already , rose higher . The Yorkshiremen waited patiently for , the Egyptian stock . When that was reached , however , the American demand reappeared more active than ever . They were dumbfounded . Their stocks needed replenishing , and they bid almost in desperation . But they were outbid all through the s...

THE MISSION OF AN AGRICULTURAL JOURNAL . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

THE MISSION OF AN AGRICULTURAL JOURNAL . The enormous circulation of the present number of the FARMERS REVIEW , the fact that it will reach so many thousands of * farmers outside of its regular weekly readers , seems to render an expression of its views as to its mission timely and appropriate . The primary objects of an agricultural paper are so patent that they need be scarcely touched upon . To disseminate useful information on all agricultural topics , to keep its readers posted on the movements of the agricultural world—to accomplish this the REVIEW maintains a thoroughly efficient editorial staff , supple , mented by an abler list of contributors than probably any other agricultural paper in the country . When a special correspondent is needed on any particular subject , the REVIEW always seeks out the most competent person to be found for the duty , and intrusts it to him . Such articles as those of Prof . Riley , Prof . Morrow Prof . Cook , Hon . J . R . Dodge , Hon . Samuel...

A CROP FOR ARID LANDS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

A CROP FOR ARID LANDS . Among the variety of seeds sent out by the Commissioner of Agriculture , there has been sent about 100 bushels of seed of Egyptian or Rice Corn , to various places in the West for cultivation upon arid lands . As we have before stated , the State Board of Agriculture of Kansas has now called attention to this cereal , which it states can be grown without irrigation upon the vast arid fields of the far West , and it is spoken of in glowing terms as promising to solve a difficulty of the greatest magnitude in respect to the future settlement of the country . The New York Times , in quoting from this report , says , that the especial value of the grain is in its power of resisting drouth . Of this it gives-exaniptea similar to those published in the REVIEW of April 8 th . We clip from the article referred to an account of the properties of the cereal : The kernels grow in a tuft like that on the top of sorghum . Each one is something smaller and rounder than a g...

SOUND INSURANCE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

SOUND INSURANCE . The time has surely gone by when sensible people have to be urged to insure their property against fire . The frequently recurring losses , the unfortunate condition of those who have neglected this all important duty , speak so eloquently in favor of their protecting our property that we have come to regard a man whose property is not insured as a less than reasonable being . The important question , then , for those who already regard insurance as a necessity , is to secure it in a company in which they can have implicit confidence . You do not insure because you expect your property to burn , but to save yourself and family from serious , perhaps irreparable loss if it should , consequently insurance , to ue satisfactory , must be in a company that is , beyond question , sound and reliable . Now , contradictory as the statement may appear , the very indications of a companys good management and conservative ways , which are in themselves such safeguards to the a...

DEERE ROTARY DROP PLANTER [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

DEERE ROTARY DROP PLANTER MERIT , THE KEY TO SUCCESS . From the innumerable kinds and immense quantities of agricultural machines made , lt would seem as though every possible demand was provided for , and that every branch of that kind of manufacturing was filled . Cases are constantly coming up , however , to show that there ls always room for an implement ot superior merit . Among the most noticeable that has come under our observation lately is the success ot the new firm of Deere & Mansur Company , of Moline , 111 . Starting less than three years ago in the corn planter business , and supplying tbe trade with a simple , durable and . accurate Rotary Drop Planter , a thing other manufacturers had tried unsuccessfully to do for years , they have already made themselves one of , it not THE largest manufacturers ot that implement ln the country ; their planter—the Deere Rotary Drop —- has become the favorite wherever introduced The demand for them is already so large th...

INSURANCE ITEMS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 22 April 1880

INSURANCE ITEMS . The following humorous ideal of a would-be legislator s intended law tor the regulation of insurance , is a very happy take-off on the ridiculous insurance bills which are periodically presented to tbe various State legislatures . Indeed , it Is perhaps going too far to call it a take-off , for it is scarcely more absurd than bills which have been actually proposed on this comparatively little understood subject We give it in extenso : KUHLEMEIER s IllSUBAUOB BILL—WHAT HE WOULD HAVE DONE FOB TJE INSURED IF HE HAD BEEN ELECTED . The following bill has been drawn up by Mr . Euhlemeier and would have been presented to the Legislature had he been elected to a seat in that honorable body . It Is a bill regulating the measure of damages , and worthy of persual : SECTION l . It shall be unlawful for any insurance company to employ any agent who does not know the value of all things , and tell the exact value of buildings much better than the persons who built the same , o...
