[ We should be glad to see our eastern editorial brethren giving the following article from the ^ Illinois Monthly Magazine , an extensive circulation . —By thus doing , they will undoubtedly oblige many of their readers , who examine with much interest , all articles relating to this country . ] MINTS TO EMIGRANTS , i In pursuance of our design , of making our work u-ci ul to persons who are about to emigrate to our State , we propose to answer a lew of the quest ions which are sometimes put to 1 us by such individuals . What season is most favorable , for ihose who come from the Atlantic Stales , must depend upon the mode of conveyance which they intend to adopt . In the spring , from the time of the breaking up of the frost until warm weather , all the natural roads , west of the mountains , are bad , and the artificial , or turnpike roads , are so few , as to afford but little i 1 assistance in a long journey . The emigrant , II therefore , should throw the latter out of his ,...

Presence of mind in Shipwreck . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 9 February 1832

Presence of mind in Shipwreck . [ From ! Journal . ] The following narrative exemplifies in a most striking manner , the commanding sway which a bold and daring spirit exercises over the energies of its fellow men in tbe hour of peril . The recital may serve to hold forth to the young officers of the British army a noble example of resolution in tbe time of danger . On the 2 d of June , 1816 , the Archduke Charles , transport , sailed from Quebec to Halifax , having on board six companies of the Royal Nova Scotia regiment , consisting of eeven officers and the staff of the regiment , two hundred men , and forty-eight women and children . The former part of the voyage was pros |> erous ; the vessel had been ten days at sea , and was approaching her place of destination . On the evening of the 12 th of June , a dense fog arose , stretching from northeast to southwest . The Archduke Charles was then in the track of the homeward bound West Indiamen , and , as usual in such ca...

EOUTII CAROX . XHA . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 9 February 1832

EOUTII CAROX . XHA . [ From the 1 W England Magazine , j There are between Charleston and the Savannah river , ranges of Islands as rich ai any in the world . Before the cultivation of cotton in Carolina , many were the haunts of . alligators , overgrown with woods and rank weeds : but they arc now cultivate ! by a polished anil it . lt luge t people , mid when a traveller passes them swiftly in a steamboat they seem to him like the blessed islands in Mirza s vision . I have net been upon all of them , and will describe but one . Not far from Beaufort , you will discover before you a settlement that looks , at a distance , like a thriving New England village ; so much so that you mieht think yourself at home , without wishing to be there . At the landing is a thick cluster of palmettoes , so close that their tops are interwoven and resemble dilapidated entablature , while tb ¦¦• lall straight trunks look like pillars of a temple . The palmetto will increase your sense of tbe bea...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 9 February 1832

[ From the Illinois Patriot . ] SSIR , —As school commissioner for the counI ty of Morgan , I am required to present to the | County Commissioners Court , annually , a summary statement of the manner proposed for the distribution of tho interest arising on I the school funds of each Township . The requisition may be considered as singular , because , before any distribution can be made of the interest , some system for Common schools should be adopted , and no provision has been made by the Legislature for this end . I am not certain , however , from reading the law , hut the Legislature intended that School commissioners , should prepare and present to the i Courts , plans or systems for the regulation and support of Common Schools in each township , which would include the plan proposed for the distribution of the interest on the school funds ; this view of the subject imposes upon School Commissioners an arduous task , and the performance of a duty in which j society has a deep...
