The Profitable Type . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
The Profitable Type . ( Continued from page 7 ) . 527 , 519 , 479 an * 455 pounds respectively . There is no use to claim every thing in favor of the Berkshires . They must meet the best of the other breeds produce , and unless they do equal or excel the other breeds as producers what chance do they stand with the other breeds , among the hard headed farmers that produce the pork . Here is a sample of what other breeds have done . In 1907 at the Missouri State Fair , a breeder showed some Chester White pigs , these pigs were farrowed in March and were shown the first week in October , these pigs were not weighed , I thought they would weigh 300 pounds or more , and I learned later that one of the boars of this Utter was shipped to Lincoln , Neb ., at the close of the fair , and when taken out of his crate in Nebraska he weighed 305 pounds , and in 1908 tne same exhibitor showed 7 or 8 pigs of same age and breeding that I think were fully as large , they had not been weighed , they w...

Published Monthly by Sheffield Farm , Glendale , Ohio . August , 1910 WHAT W . S . CORSA SAYS : White Hall , 111 ., July 15 , . 1910 . Sheffield Farm , Glendale , Ohio . Gentlemen : —Let me congratulate you most heartily on your enterprise and good judgment in annexing to Sheffield Farm the remarkable breeding and show boar , Handsome Lee , who has proven himself such a distinguished sire and winner . In August , 1906 , Handsome Lee was sold in the Gregory Farm summer sale with the following comment : Handsome Lee is of that Berkshire type which indicates that he will prove a good sire . The foregoing has been amply borne out in his subsequent record and with the opportunity which he will now have of being mated to a superior and large herd of selected sows...
Who ' s Who in Berkshires . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
Who s Who in Berkshires . H . T . MORGAN The articles under the above caption have brought favorable comment from numerous readers and for this month s issue , we have gone to Ohio , near Cincinnati , and there found Mr . H . T . Morgan , manager of Sheffield Farm Berkshires . Mr . Morgan s experience with pure bred swine dates from 1900 , at which time he began breeding large Yorkshires at his farm in Michigan . Commencing in a small way he succeeded in building up a fine herd and a profitable business and the Spring Lake herd of large Yorkshires was as well known as any herd of the breed in the United States . In 1906 he sold out his herd and went to Rosston , Pa ., and assumed the management of Aldoro Farm . Early in 1907 he commenced buying Berkshires for Aldoro Farm and the great herd he established there was fonceded to be one of the very best the country afforded at that time . Air . Morgan bought many noted brood sows and the show herd he exhibited at the big fairs of 1907 i...
An Invitation . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
An Invitation . Fellow Berkshire Breeders :- Prom what I know of the Berkshire breeders that I have met this year , I am glad to call such men my fellows . I like Berkshires and Berkshire breeders . Being a new Berkshire breeder myself , I want to get acquainted with a large number of older Berkshire breeders as well as a still larger number of farmers and feeders who ought to be Berkshire breeders . So I have pleasure in extending all a very cordial invitation to attend the Leland , Smith , Van Doren Sale to be held on the farm of Mr . J . A . Leland , near Springfield , Illinois on Wednesday , August 17 th . My offering in this sale will be good and I think that Berkshire breeders will be pleased with it . I trust that breeders will encourage my efforts along Beekshire lines and will support this sale as it deserves your best support . Messers . J . A . Leland and E . S . & S . B . Smith also join me in this invitation . Very truly yours , 0 . C . Van Doren , Loami , I...

Little Things . W . N . Tobie . King Saul of Israel , in the midst of a furious fight with the Phillistines , once issued an order that none of his soldiers should eat a bite until evening , and pronounced a curse upon anyone who should disobey the strange order . His son , Jonathan , who had not heard the order , found honey dripping out of a bee tree , poked ? a stick in the delicious honey-comb and ate a little , whereby he was greatly refreshed . The king afterwards discovered his son s disobedience and ordered him to be killed . Jonathan excused his eating the honey in these words : I did certainly taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand ; and lo , I must die —as much as to say , I broke the law , indeed , but I should be excused because I broke it only a little . Jonathan stumbled onto the very worst excuse in the world . He might have plead that he didnt know of the kings order , which was true . He might have said that the order itself was unwise—bet...

He Liked His World Pig Wingo , Ky . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : — I have just received the pig sent me on your offer and I cannot wait to tell you how well pleased I am with it , It is better than L expected . I must thank you for your promptness in this matter , and your dealing only exemplifies the merits of your good paper . I think the paper will inspire the farmers to improve their hogs and the Berkshire breed is going to be one of the most favored breed in the improvement . I have some of my subscribers asking me when the paper will come . I think by that that they will become interested and I hope you will send some to them as early as convenient . Again thanking you for the manner in which you have treated me in this matter , I remain , Yours for Berkshires , Dee D . Brown .
Good Sales at Kenton [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
Good Sales at Kenton The Berkshire World Is a regular visitor at our place , and we look forward to its coming with pleasure as we know we get the Berkshire news from all parts of the United States . We have every copy of The Berkshire World on file from the first issue up to the present , and we think every Berkshire breeder should file his papers for future reference . Our Berkshires are in fine healthy condition , and our only trouble this year has been we have not had the success in saving our pigs as we should have had . We have a young litter of 9 ( 10 farrowed ) out of Premier Belle 2 d and by Baron Premier 24 th that are very fine and we predict some great ones from this litter . Our sales have been very good , and we have not been able to supply the demand , almost every thing shipped has been weanlings . Our prices have been very satisfactory , and we have received some very flattering letters and we here submit a few of the many testimonials . Florence , Miss ., Dec . 1 ,...
Northern Grown Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
Northern Grown Berkshires The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Our Northern grown Berkshires are all on the waterwagon these days and the cool , running water seems to look awful good to them these hot days . We have hau no rains here that amounted to much , for seveftl weeks and it certainly is getting very dry . Forest fires have been very bad in some sections , but timely local rains stopped them for a time . While the season may possibly be a little short here for a very few crops , with the soil prospects we expect to see this Northern country one of the best agricultural and live stock sections in the U . S . Corn , and other crops are looking good , and you would have to look a long way for a better hay crop than Roycroft Farm had . We had a Frost here yesterday , although only July . Seemed good to see L . E . s smiling face again , for , of course , he is always smiling . Unless he fed us a little taffy wh / e here he seemed to think that Roycroft had a pr...
About Type . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
About Type . Dundee N . Y . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Dear Sirs : —We read with great interest Mr . Spicer s article in the June issue . After a careful reading of that and his previous articles , we are not sure we know just what position he does take . His advocacy for size , we most heartily endorse . Size is a hobby we have ridden in the Berkshire business for years . There will be enough small ones at the best ; but , if Mr . Spicer contends that in order to obtain size we must put up with long noses and plain narrow heads , we by no means agree with him . The weights he gives of his own pigs in sustaining his remarks are commendable not only to his skill as a breeder but as a feeder . While we have bred lots of Berkshires of considerable size and with plain , unattractive heads and long pasterns , we have bred a great many more that had as much size and possessed at the same time desirable beads and the general conformation usually accompanying such heads , and...
