r THE CITIZEN. .SATURDAY, APRIL V4, 1875 l'EKJI Kl. ' Wo have a friend in Tucson who Is a sort of character, and upon whom we have bestowed the name of Uriah Heep, not because he ia very humble or vicious or hypocritical, but because he is just the opposite, and we always did like a con trasL And when, in describing some of the qualities of our frieud, we say that he takes to the law as naturally as does a newly landed Celt, the reader must not anppose that he is any the more a Heep reflection for that. We do not believe that Dickens meant to intensity Uriah s ovil propensities by putting him through a course of law. The author merely gave to his great delineation certain strong lines of character which he bad gathered ia his observations of men, and sent him forth even as the Creator sent Adam forth Adam slipped up ou the apple, but expe rience would lead us to believe that, bad he encountered orange peel, his fall would have been as bud if not worse. The Uriah Heeps, burdened with...

THE CITIZEN. SATURDAY, - - MAY 1, 1875. THAT AKM At BUEAIL Another Winter's storms have culmina ted around their center of attraction, the Union and Central Pacific railroads, and have descended upon their victim like the wolf on the fold. Regularly as the sea son comes, the winds and waters and mows gather from space and seem to se lect this devoted line of land for the grand yearly high carnival of the elements. Kach season, the telegraph or what is left of it, tells of the fierce assault of the storm from its high laid ambush; of the satirical washouts and demolitions and blockades along this emblem of man's prowess; of stornt-bound passengers ea gerly availing themselves of the long sought chance to find out what patience and canned oysters will do for the mind diseased; of delayed love letters resulting in Images torn from hearts forever, or un til the next mail; of western merchants imprecating for the return of their more certain " steamer day," and eastern mer chants praying...

THE CITIZEN. ATURDA Y, HAY 8, 1875 HIS LITTLE HAT. Cardinal McCloskey of New York, baa lately haJ a little redcap given him by the pope of Rome and made more fuss over it than a boy does over his first pair of boots. In the out start two of the local newspapers made their readers quite im happy by enlisting t hem in a violent, side issue as to whether the new cap was to bo called a l-.eretta or a tueehelto. Our hered. Uary prejudices all draw us towards tu chetto. But whatever may be its proper name we will relieve the anxiety of the reader by saying that the cap was brought safely over the water and is now in the possession of our new cardinal and will probably prove a great saving in the way of night caps for his Grace. This cap was presented amidst great ceremonies at the Episcopal lesidence in New York. The residence had been nicely fixed up, fresh ly whitewashed, aired, and the windows cleaned, invitations had been sent out generally and they were all there, from Bishop O'Hoola...

THE CITIZEN. SATURDAY. MAY 22, 1875 Thk speech made by Geueral Crook at the banquet given him in Sa,n Francisco, is in striking contrast to some of his predecessors. He spoke of the people and resources of the country in high praise, and predicted a bright luture for Arizona. The difference between him and his im mediate predecessor was, that the lormcr made it a study to see how he could keep from doing it, while Crook went to work, and gave peace and security to the coun try. The former was soreheaded because he did not do, while Crook did the work and got his reward and a jost acknowl edgment for his services. The former staked his reputation in joining in whole sale abu9C against the hardy frontiersmen; while Crook went to work togrre them peace and chance to make a living. For a time it seemed to be th popular road to tame and fortune, to abuse the frontiers men for the crime of trying to civilize and build up a new country, but the tables turned, and js6tiee assumed its way aa...
