The history of commercial nations has demonstrated that, as an abitrary standard of Talues, it is not competent to avert those financial panics growing out of reck less speculation, general extravagance and improvidence that so far from exerting a conservative influence 'over i commercial convulsions and db...

We hTe held to the doctrine that the discussion of religious questions belongs exclusively to the religious press ; but when topics of a purely theological character are drugged into tie political arena, such topics come within the legitimate sphere of the secular press. The recent outburst of 1 religious bigotry in the Ohio election, followed by , a sitailar exhibition in New Jersey aud then in the . city of New York, clearly indicate s purpose on the part of Puritan Radicalism to array American Protestantism against American Catholicism. Were this more made in the interest of a purer type of Christianity, its bigotry might be forgiven in consideration of its mo tive ; but knowing it to be a vile effort of base men to strengthen a corrupt party by enlisting in its favor the mis guided passions and prejudices of sec tarianism, we protest ag...

The elections just over, though not go disastrous to the Democratic party as at first reported, teach no lesson that should not lead the South to con sider how hopeless it is for her, by taking an active part in federal pol itics, to strive to restore the govern ment to its original purityv It should rejoice more over the victory in Mis sissippi than over a similar triumph in half a doten Northern States, because the salvation of the entire South de pends, first, upon its free exercise of the rijbt of local self-government and, second, upon its successful . efforts to develop its immense agricultural and mineral resources supplemented by such diversified pursuits as will secure independenceof every other community for the prime necessaries of life. It is unquestionably the duty of the South to send delegates toCougrcss whose in tegrity will serve as a shining example...
