re , . . . ST. JOHNS, APACHE COUNTY, ARIZONA TERRITORY, THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 1890. NUMBER 9 f U I It til IH Pi II. ' When forestry is first brought -to their attention many persons think chiefly of tree-planting, of the effect of forests on rainfall, and other things which are not essen tial or of the greatest practical ira portance. Their first impression are likely to be superficial and in adequate. The question of the ef fect of forests on rainfall has not been determined. It is a matter lor accurate and continued scien tific investigation, without which all opinions and theories regarding the subject are alike worthless, be cause they cannot be verified. The point of general practical interest here is the function of forests, es pecialbv of mountain forests, in the distribution of the water that falls upon them as rain or snow. The doctrine of rational and practical forestry regarding this matter is, that forests retain the water in the spongy mass of their floor, retard ing its...

LOSING A VACUUM. BTotr Mike'H Kindness Was He warded "by an Ungrateful Creature Tho teacher of the Eoseville High School was a young1 man with an ardent love of science, and the boys and girls had all caught something of his spirit. Twenty homes ia Eoseville jave evidence of the experimental work which was being carried on by the young people, and mothers and aunts held indignation meetings over the bugs and toads and snakes and birds, alive and dea, that appea: ed in unexpected places. One day Frank Newman found an unusually handsome mud-turtle, nearly as large as his hat, in which, ho carried it home. That evening after tea there was an excited meeting of young people on the lawn. Tennis was forgotten as the boys discussed ways and means of preserving this turtle's fine shell. Finally they decided to and asked their teacher's advice. Mr. Dean was full of interest He told them that he had once cleaned a shell of this sort very easily, after ho had killed the turtle by putting him u...

VOLUME 6. ST. JOHNS, APACHE COUNTY, ARIZONA TERRITORY, THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 1890. NUMBER 11 IS -t -.P 3 ha. Cat..- National Wealta. Robert GifTen, the English statis ticinn and writer on economic top ics, has renentty read a paper be fore the Royal Statistical Societj- on the accumulated wealth of na lions. He places the wealth of Great Britain, in round numbers, at .$50,000,000,000, giving England $1,540 a head. Scotland 1,215, and Ireland .$465. Comrjarine the three richest nations of the world, he gives the wealth per head as fol lows: GreatBritain, $1,450; France, $950; and the United States, $500. If this shows anything it shows the utter fallacy and supreme folly of averages as applied to matters of this sort. By GifTen's computation there ought to be nearly three times as much abject poverty in the Uni ted States as in Grent Britain, for if the average wealth per capita is not a measure of the comparative "wealth of ihe people, and conse quently of their povert3T, it is not ...
