"WHERE DID YOU COME FROM. BABY DEAR?" BY GEORGE MACDONALD. Where did you come from, baby dear? Out of the everywhere into here. Where did you get your eyes so blue? Out of the sky as I came through? What mates tie light in them sparkle and spin? Some of the starry spikes left in. Where did you get that little tear? I found it waiting when I got here. What makes yourforehead so smoth and high? A soft hand stroked it as I went by. What makes your cheek like a warm white rosg? I saw something better than auy one knows. Whence that three-cornered smile of bliss? Three angels gave me at once a kiss. Where did you get this pearly ear? God spoke, and it came out to hear. Where did yon get those arms and hands? Love made itself into hook and bands. Feet, whence did you come, you darling things? From the same bos as the cherub's wings. How did they all come just to be you? God thought of me, and so I grew. How did you come to us, you dear? God "thought about you, and so I am here. The Jews o...

Spherical Geography. In thesc'days of universal inter comuiUDicatioi? of railway lines and steamship routes, and telegraphs wossing continents and oceans every man who would keep up with the great facts and enterprises of j age finds his school-knowledge of Geography utterly inadequate and often fallacious, lie finds some of the most important facts as to rela tive location and distances breaking upon hi3 mind as new revelations. His ideas of places and their rela tions within the several countries may be correct enough, but not so of those whose distance is measured by an arc on the earth's surface. As to these, the ideas given by our study of map-geography were full of errors. Every school-bo knew and knows that Alabany is north of New York, and that Buifalo is west of Alabany: but how many are there who learned ia school-days- that Newfoundland is right along the direct route from New York to Liverpool, and not away north of it; or, that the Azores are on the direct course to Por...

Ami the way lie tries to beat everybody else and maktf ms the only Hue to Boston is astonish in. Why, Til tell you something about Fisk. One dav just as we were starting from New York, a trim little girl stepped aboard and took a state room, saving she was going through to Boston. She wasn't dressed loud, but misrhtyneat and rich, wearing a Turkish hat, velvet sack trimmed with lace, a dress with a lot ot scal lops and trimming around it, and about the most bewildering foot I ever saw on a human. She was pret tj-, saucy, and called me old father at supper, and carried on in a way that soon showed what she was, though she deceived me at first with her ba by face and girlish manners. THE JOURNAL. The Two Gardeners—Healthfulness of Charcoal. Powdered charcoal as a filterer, deodorizer and disinfectant, is well known. The following story m Touched for in "Lord Lytton's Cax- oniana:" , .
