re HARRY FREESE, Publisher. HATS. ' - . KANSAS. WAS GLAD TO ESCAPE ALIVE Exciting Experience of English Offi cer Who Intruded on Sacred Mon keys of India. In various parts of India monkeys Ere regarded as objects of worship. One of the principal monkey temples Is at Nuddea. Such veneration is shown here to Huniman, the monkey god, hat visitors may not enter the court of the temple without removing their shoes. On one occasion an English officer, in passing up the country near Nuddea, chanced to stroll into a bamboo jangle, when his boat had "put to' for the night. He had not advanced far before he heard a terrific uproar all about him, and was not a little alarmed to behold a whole army of the largest monkeys he had ever seen making toward him from all quarters. Some jumped on the ground before him, others swung by the bamboos over his head, and many closed up the path in his rear. Several females had young ones clinging, to them, but this fact did not seem to render them Jess agile...

Why cows stood in vater Artistic Limitations Responsible for Characteristic Attitude of the .4 Humble Bovine. In a north of England town there Was a shiftless man who "would never accept gifts outright,' although he was always depending on charity, says Al Priddy in his book, "Through the Mill," relates the Youth's Companion. He painted landscapes, and my aunt, when benevolently inclined, would hire him to decorate our walls with rural scenes, highly colored in glaring tints, as if nature had turned color blind. There were cows in every scene, and Aunt Millie noticed that all the cows were up to their knees in water. Not one stood on the vivid green hills. "Jorvey," she remarked to the old man, "why do you always put the cows In the water?" ' "It's this way, Mrs. Brindin," the old artist responded. "You see, ma'am, I never learned to paint hoofs." FREE PRESS HARRY FREESE, Publisher. HAYS. - ... - - KANSAS. NOVELIST OF THE FAR NORTH Eskimo (Woman Who Writes Books Discovered by Party of Amer ican Scientists. The first Eskimo novelist has been tiscovered by a party of American scientists ' who spent last summer in Labrador. She lives at Cape Chud Jeigh, her name 13 Nlngink and she is 16 years old a mature age among her people. As tie Eskimo lan guage contains only 300 words the f oung authoress must sometimes have trouble to express her thoughts with the limited vocabulary at her com mand, but she reads and writes as fluently as any American girl of the eame age. At first she wrote on skins with sharpened bones dipped in the blood of a fish or a seal, but a mis sionary gave her a. bundle of pencils nd a bale of brown paper, and Nin gink's igloo is now piled at one end with many rolls of MSS. neatly tied with strips of sealskin. Her house is not made of skins or snow blocks, like most of the surrounding Eskimo habi tations, but i...

GOWNS FOR INDOORS Highest Type of Sartorial Ele gance in Their Construction. Boudoir Toilettes, Whether the Negli gee or the Teagown, Are Things of Grace and Beauty Short or Long Matinees Worn. NEW YORK. For a quarter of a century past tee teagown has steadily been growing in grace and beauty. Each season the special artists in that' sartorial line, striving to outdo one another, turn out confections of such loveliness that few leniinine economists can resist them. The woman of liberal dres3 allowance doesn't try to overcome their allure for herself. She simply buys here one and there several of the comfort able garments and only occasionally does she admit that she might have managed with a less number. In fact, the teagown in common with the sim pler order of negligees, is the one type of garment not greatly affected by the vagaries of fashion. From season to season mere are, to be sure, slight dif ferences made in the sleeves and the trimmings, but tiie negligee that was the last...

FREE PRESS r HARRY FREESE, Publisher. HATS. - KANSAS. Just cow home is as hot as yon make it. Humanity has been too much sub dued even to swat the fly. When aviators stop flying circus fashion they -will stop dying. The summer girl -wears a heart on her sleeve but it's not her own. Still, for popularity the summer re sort prospectus gathers first place. A coat is as superfluous In summer as a straw hat would be in winter. If there is anything that makes a man hot it is advice on how to keep cool. Avocation Is fleeting, but vacation money can give it many points and still win. What we need now Is a crusade among mosquitoes for safe and sane vacations. Like the filling of a Eandwlch. the occasional cool day is the most ap preciated part. Icemen are nothing if not consis tent. The price of ice always goes up with the mercury. Philadelphia will start a war on mosquitoes and they do disturb sleep, that's a fact. The textile fabric men complain that the narrow skirts are ruining them. So ...

f Camel Hump and Giraffe Sway at the Capital WASHINGTON. la a furtive sort of way people have taken note of the "camel hump walk." It's here. It came to Pennsylvania .avenue rath er gradually, but by much quicker process than that by which the abor iginal man stopped walking on all fours; for It traces Its ancestry back to the" hobble skirt and no farther. Just as we UBed to have the "kan garoo walk," we now have the "camel hump walk." The camel-hump walk Is nature's way of adapting itself to the sheath skirt. It Is nature's law and probably the very best nature could do under the circumstances. It will be seen by careful attention to the pictures that the genuine camel-hump Is nothing more nor less than an attempt on the part of the hobbled female to get away from what Is coming behind her, a direct applica tion of the theory that self-preservation is one of the primal instincts of humanity. The peculiar efTect Is due to the tendency of the upper portion of the lorso to advance a l...
