Mr. Belcher, of the well-known firm of Belcher S: Bros., St. Lonis, Mo., recently gaye the following interesting facta in rela tion to sorghum to the editor of the Wi3 consin State Journal ! "He says that in the fall and winter of 18G2, they refined at their Chicago refinery many thousand gallons of sorghum eyrup, end made of it an elegant article of golden eyrup, that easily sold in the market at good prices under various fancy names, not being understood to be sorghum syrup at all. They 6old it as golden syrup rather than sorghum, because it was really a good article, and because golden syrup had al ready an established reputation, and sor ghum had not. . ."Mr. Belcher said there i3 no trouble in matin a first-rate article of golden syrup of any good light colored sorghum, and without much diminution or expense. or SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 18G1. AC It I CULTURAL ITEMS. Trom the American Agriculturalist August. for Crop Prospect. Reports now coming in from all parts of the country indicate, on the' wLole, favorable harvests. From some sections the accounts are glowkg people being hardly able to estimate the great yield of wheat and oat3. This U true of parts of Pennsylvania at any rate, and good crops are reported from Mary land, and West Virginia. Throughout Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky the wheat has suffered "in streaks" from drouth, and in Eome counties the estimates are of to a crop. In some places the printer wheat was, much hurt by the frost and subae quenyy the drouth nearly finished it. The rains in June came just in time to save the oats and other spring grain and in many sections they filled well. There are few complaints of either rust or fly : though there are some serious one3.
