TIMES - REQISTER-Supplement. SALEM, VIRGINIA, FRIDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 6. 1891. A STRANGE MARRIAGE. Si Collins was out of work. In common with many others, for reasons not necessary to enter upon, he hud been idle for some time. He was almost out of money?-fifty-cents is not much. But he was not out of hope. He was so determined to put his shoulder to the wheel that he could not believe that there would not soon he a wheel to shoulder. Now on this Saturday afternoon, with everything at a standstill, he knew that there would be no use in standing before closed doors or of loitering iu empty yards, so he made up his mind to have n holiday, and all that sweet, sunny afternoon to pretend to himself that he had nothing to worry about. There was music in the park; there were seats to sit. upon. A man could eat live cents' worth of soda crackers as well there as elsew here. In fact, they made quite a neat little lunch. On Sunday he would buy a paper and get every item in the column* headed...

An Ey? For an Eye. 44 You see," said &Q old timer us j ho silt in a northern Wiscoasin land ottice a few days ago, " the people up there have Law and justice these days, but it was not so always. " So one afternoon seven of the gang, Hugh Boden, John CJi 1 roy, Sam Ijeukin, Will Beard si ey, Duke Thomas, Syl Wordtn, snd Iks brother Hank, got a surprise party on Husking. They bound him to a tree, and in the presence of his wife and children, laid the lash on his back most unmercifully. The pleadings of tho poor wife were in vain. So sound or murmur escaped the lips of Hoskins. Finally, either by ac...

The rcc-riit letter of Mr. Cleveland to the chairman of the great antifree coinage mooting at Cooper t'nion on the night of the 13th, created a groat stir in political circles, and brought from many prominent Democrats. including neatly all the Vir ginia Congressmen, an expression that this letter had killed Mr. Clove-i land's chances for the next presidential nomination. A reaction has taken place, and the press is now eulogizing the man "who would rather ho right than president," and whilst those same prominent men may he opposed to Mr. Cleveland's views on the silver question, there is no doubt that they wished they had not been quite so hasty, for though the Democratic masses favor free coinage, yet the sterling honesty and courage of Mr. Cleveland elevate him far above any statesman of the present day.
