Quill Warriors.— [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 9 November 1861

Quill Warriors.— It is very amusing to read some of the newspapers of the day, and see how cleverly the battles should and ought to be fought by the contending 1 armies now in the field. Knights of' the quill, who never smelt powder, except in the form of fire-crackers, are,' as by magic, transformed into able tac-; ticians, and show an ability in directing the manoevures on a battle field, this is indeed astonishing. These worthies see at a glance, and elucidate in a brief "squib" how this and that regiment, brigade and battalion should move on and accomplish a sudden and complete victory. In the meantime our generals, with all their actual experience "cant see it," and so keep on studying their maps, and directing their plans of attack and defence, without having,as yet accomplished any iinporportant result. But as the end is not yet come, and as paper bullets are no more efficient than paper blockades, we shall still continue to rely upon the ability, science and patriotism of our...

NEVADA LEGISLATIVE. [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 9 November 1861

NEVADA LEGISLATIVE. Before the Legislature of Nevada Teritory, now in session at Carson City, arc pending a number of ljills of vital importance. Among which is one styled "The Incorporation Act," containing some very objectionable features to 11011 resident capitalists. This bill has already passed the House with but one disssenting voice, and is now before the Council, where the members are nearly equally divided. This bill recpiircs a majority of the trustees or directors of all incorporated companies to be residents of, and to keep their office and books within the Teritory. Such a law will, undoubtedly add materially to her wealth and population, and companies formed to work in her rich and extensive mineral region, cannot reasonably complain, if required to submit to just and legitimate legislation, whilst they are enjoying the benefit of her resources. The larger portion capital now invested in mining operations within her borders, is owned by 11011 residents, and men cannot ...

Army Hovciiiciits.--- The withdrawal of Gen. Scott froni active service, andthe.thc appointment of McClelland in command of the arm} of the United States, has created a dec] sensation throughout the length ant breadth of our country. For nearlj half a century Gen. Scott has held one of the highest positions the. Government could confer, and has discharger t'le duties of his office with an ability unequalled by any commanding genera ot the age—and lie will carry with hin to his retired retreat from the cxcitinf scenes of the battle-field, the warmcs affections of the nation. , The govern mcnt regrets the necessity that requires his resignation, but is fortunate thai there is one in the prime and vigor 01 manhood upon whom the mantle ol Gen. Scott may fall with the approbation and with one voice of the people of the loyal states. Gen. McClelland Jias already so distinguished himself as to inspire the Government with confilcnce in his ability to command her itrinv, and jvill doubtleis ...
