DEPUTATIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 14 September 1883

DEPUTATIONS. --0-o A deputation, consisting of Messrs. Woolcott, Armstrong, and Lowman, members of the Eltham Shire Council, and their Secretary, Mr. Wingrovo, was introduced to the Comnmissioner of Public Works by Mr. Cameron, on Wednesday, 12th inst., to urge upon the Commissioner the desirability of the Depiartment expending the £500 placed on the estimates for the purpose of making a road front Yarra Flats to the Splitters' Yea River. It was urged that inasmuch as the cost" of purchasing land and fencing could not be taken out of the vote, the Shire funds were not sufficient to meet more legitimate claims, especially as it would, most likely, amount to £150, or more. Apart from this, other re sponsibilities would follow the perform ing of this work by the Shire Council, and another draw. baok was that the Shire Engineer condemned the route by Olement's-the one preferred by the splitters. Against this it was stated by some members of the deputations that Mr. Johnston, late of the...

HIETERODOX PAPERS.. (cosT'nR TEmn.) The other day I was much 'amused, not to say surprised, at rending among some South Australian police news that three men had been fined for "obaiining intoxicating liquor during prohibited hours on Sunday." As they were not eharged with teing drunkand disorderly,' nor yet with staonling or obtaining the liquor in a dishonest manonr, but simply with "obtaining it," I have a right to suppose that they purchased it either on' " tick" or for " cash downi" in i regiilnr way of business, butt tlihie' was 'inothing said of the puilicnn or other sinner from whom they obtained it being 'fined. ANDERSON'S CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 14 September 1883

ANDERSON'S CREEK. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The committee of our public reading room and Mechanics' Institute should certainly have credit for their endeavors to posh the things to a success-besides having a, or the best, reading room in the district, a further sum of £5 5s has been judiciously expended in books. Chess lhas become a favorite sasoso. ment, and our little township, despite its poverty, can boast pro ratd with any township in Victoria for their love of music and chess. We don't stick at mediocro thlings, but as it appears fly, at the high arts. Several small orushings have taken place during the plst week at Mr. Grant's battery, but I uan sorry to say they have not proved according to ex pectations Some, certainly, have boon trial ones, yet it has thrownL a damper upOii US.
