A LAMENT [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

A LAMENT This Xmas-nineteen twenty-six, I landed in a sorry fix: Of grub and money I had nix To celebrate the Xmas. A man with whom I spent my pay (He helped me drink it day by day) Forgot, when it was gone, to say, "Come down to dine at XMAS." And, like an empty-headed clod, f "done" my cheque, some ten pounds odd, So, as you can't live on the "nod," I took the track for XMAS. I rolled a swag on Xmas Day, And started on my weary way: A little cared to where 1 M stray, This hungry, dreary XMAS. 1 never knew where next I 'd get A decent feed, a smoko, a "wet,' ' 1 had no duff, it's safe to bet, At dinner time on XMAS. For days I wandered down the track, With blistered feet and aching back, Just getting, here and there, a snack Of tucker left from XMAS. I landed in Canberra Town, And on the creek threw "Tilly" down: Then vowed "lu hell they'd roast me brown" If I were broke next Xmas. For here I mean to get a job, And treasure every hard-earned bob. T'H see the "boozers" do not rob Me...

CHRISTMAS AT CANBERRA [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

CHRISTMAS AT CANBERRA What's Canberra like at Christmas? Well, it is possible for highly imaginative and more or less literary day-return visitors to revel kneedeep in verbiage, apostrophising Canberra as Elysium, Utopia or the New Jerusalem. It may be all these places, and a few more, Ad mittedly, 'tis not the worst place in the world, while Queanbeyan still maintains its feeble respiration. But Queanbeyan always excepted, I'm preparing to spend next Christmas anywhere on earth, so long as it is not Canberra, if next Christmas at Canberra is going to be anything like last Christmas at Canberra. These remarks are, of course, without pre judice to Canberra as a tourist resort. Every body who has ever come to Canberra knows what a beautiful place it is for a day, or seven days, or even fourteen days. But then, when you become a local resi dent, receiving an occasional "Sun" Pictorial or 'iSunday Sun," with its pictures show ing sunshine, or featuring sunny sands and sunny-featured hol...

: ^ 1 i BABY CLINIC ESTABLISHMENT AT EASTLAKE. In view of the early establishment of the first Baby Clinic in Canberra, under the aus pices of the Women and-Children's Health So ciety of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. P. T. McNamara, during a recent visit to Syd ney, was enabled. to visit similar institutions in that city, and his observations thereon, which are given hereunder, should be of par ticular interest in the light of the opening of the first Baby Clinic at Canberra in thc near "future. During Mr. McNamara 's sojourn in Syd ney, he, in company with Dr. Sydney Morris, Director of Maternal and Child Welfare, visit ed the »jain health centres of Sydney, among which was the Woolloomooloo centre, which is ii bout the finest in Sydney, having reception, waiting, consulting and treatment rooms, as .well as a sisters' sitting-room, and the usual kitchen and d'ining-room. This centre is plainly but very usefully furnished, and in the last Mord in utility for child treatment, an...

WIRELESS A FEW WORDS TO RADIO FANS. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

WIRELESS A FEW WORDS TO RADIO FANS. (By "Potentiometer.'') Now we have a good few wireless cranks mound Canberra, and in particular thc Cause way, it would be well if a few bought a book, "How to tune in without interfering with a neighbour's set. Wireless is a hoon to residente living in the country, but is made simply ridiculous by and thc howling of valves of the nearby sets. Potentiometer took a walk one evening when our friend "Static" took charge of the air; he found not only one, but three, who were delighted and contented with switching his condenser dials round, so causing some beau tiful noises. If those radio friends who make a practice of this would glance at item two on the bot tom of their wireless lieensc (if they've got one), they will see that they are liable to a fine of £20-music or signals of the strength of say six, are preferable to discords of the strength of sixty. As a matter of fact, a very large proportion of users of radio sets at Canberra and Causeway ar...

BOWLS [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

BOWLS By "Jack." mi_A.:_;j»_J_I_i_i ._ _ 3_._ The activities on the bowling green during the holidays, and, in fact, eyer since the Can berra Club was formed, have proved clearly that 'the organisation of the bowling fraternity in Canberra has filled a gap in the lives of many of the more sedate members of the com munity of, this city. The fascination of this old-time sport attracts these worthy citizens to the green on evenings during the week, as well as on. Saturday afternoons and holidays. It has beeh said that it is not only the par ticipants in the game, who welcome the forma tion of the club, but that the good housewives have also found appreciation of it on account of the refreshing influence which it has on their ' ' toilers, ' ' and the consequent increase in their amiability on returning to their homes with the effect of their day's official worries swept from their minds. The ladies, too, are displaying much interest in the sport, and it is not uncommon to see a number o...

WORKMEN'S COTTAGES [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

WORKMEN'S COTTAGES One of the employees of the Commission, evidently inspired by the season of the year, or perhaps thinking that the Commission was in want of funds, or may be for some other reason altogether, enclosed a ten shilling note in a letter addressed to an officer of the Com mission in connection with the tenancy of the employee's cottage. The Chief Commis sioner has asked the Editor to state that the officers of the Commission dealing with this and other matters are straight men, and will always do as the officer in this case did, namely, pay the ten shilling note into the credit of the Commission's revenues, and bring the fact to the notice of the Commission. The Chief Commissioner has given instruc tions that in cases of this sort the applicant for a cottage, for instance, will have his name removed from the top to the bottom of the Hst,

CAUSEWAY [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

CAUSEWAY As it is too late to wish everyone a happy Xmas, we wish the next best, that they had a happy Xmas, and will have a prosperous New Year. A great proportion of the residents have been away to their old homes, and all report having good trips, and "fisjj yarns," "snake yards"-4o which have lately been added "car yarns"-are being exchanged and are providing sources of argument and amuse ment. The weather away seems to have been very trying for holidays, but it would be hard to beat the weather we had at Canberra. Cloudy and cool, no trouble to keep food, one. could thoroughly enjoy the whole day. Local church services were well attended during the festive season, the service of the hall being greatly appreciated. We note that tlje Friendly Societies' Hall and the Scouts'" Hall are nearly completed, and these should greatly relieve the larger halls. Pictures have been very welcome breaks to those who stayed at home-some nice pro grammes-but, owing to the absence of 'buses, some...
