It .grows in importance every day ; and as it grows it daily becomes more doubtful and uncertain. At this moment there are three candidates. " First General Taylor, a southern man, with southern views, interests, and wishes. A large slave-holder. " Second, General Cass, a northern man With southern feelings and interests. Ful- ly committed in faveur of slavery. * Third, Mr. Van Buren, opposed to the extension of slavery. He is-the candidate of thefree soil party. In other words, he is the candidate of that party which pro- tests against any other or any further ter- ritory being dedicated to slavery by the introduction of slavery into it. " The present chance of success of these candidates is, I think, in the order in which J have arranged them. LATE EUROPEAN INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 10 March 1849

LATE EUROPEAN INTELLIGENCE. The continental news was still the most interesting and important, even to us colo- nists, because the events there so materi- ally influence the value of our staples in the English markets. By the previous' intelligence from Eu- rope, we were informed of the civil war in Hungary between the Maygars and Croats I of the treachery of the Austrian Cabinet, who secretly instigated the Croats, while they professed to be neutral, and had at last openly espoused the cause of the latter, of the consequent insurrection in Vienna, the murder of the Minister of War, the triumph of the populace, and flight of the Emperor. We are now informed that the Austrian army had united with the Croats, and had besieged Vienna. - The Times of 7th November reports having received a telegraphic despatch from Paris, announcing that on the 1st Novem- ber, at 12 o'clock, all resistance in Vienna had ceased, and that the Imperial forces wero in possession of every part of the city. Expected Immigrants. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 10 March 1849

Expected Immigrants. M. W. Clifton, Esq., of Australind has received a letter from Major General La- tour, of a late date, which states that the Vestry of the parish of Marylebone had determined on sending to this colony no less than 800 young persons of both sexes, to be under the guardianship of Mr. Clif- ton, who, we understand, is by no means pleased with the idea of the numerous fa- mily about to be imposed upon him. By the arrival of the Waterlilly from S. Australia on Sunday last, we have received European intelligence up to the 7th No- vember copious details of which we give in another column. The detachment of the 99th Regt, under the command of Major Reeves, quartered at Adelaide, had received the route for this colony. A shock of an earthquake had been felt   in Gawler Town, sufficiently strong to set the crockery and pannakins dancing. Flour is quoted at £9 per ton ; wheat 3s. to 3s 6d. per. bushel. Adelaide appears to be the seat of much   sick...
