EXTRACTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 5 August 1804

EXTRACTS.               From a London paper of the latter end of December last we copy the following: "A paragraph contained in advices re- ceived from Berlin states, that The proposals of peace submitted by Russia were founded on four points :--Lampedosa was to be ceded to England in lieu of Malta ; the independence to be guaranteed of the States bordering upon France, viz. the Italian Republic, Holland;   Switzerland ; the Indemnity of the King of Sardinia ; and a General Congress of the Powers of Europe. The First Consul is said to have returned for answer, 'that England must not be trusted with any possession in the Mediterranean except Gibraltar ; that the       dependence of the States on the frontiers of France is the natural consequence of her su- periority ; that the conduct of the King of Sardinia does, not entitle him to any remune...

To the Printer of the Sydney Gazette. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 5 August 1804

To the Printer of the Sydney Gazette. SIR, I am one of that weak-minded order of men who are capable of deriving pleasure from the contemplation of a dream; and as   unbridled fancy seldom fails in furnishing its morning fare, so I, nourishing the friend- ly intercourse between my sleeping and my waking spirit, never fail to recall its wan- derings to recollection, and almost soar anew upon the pinions of delightful fiction. By habitually yielding to this species of refined amusement, the imagination would seem to have acquired strength; and frequently   transports me to so dangerous a height as to bring the fate of the aspiring Phaeton to my mind, and awe me into apprehension of a similar reward to my presumption; not-   withstanding which, I continue still to   mount the chariot of imagination, and trust to experience for my safety; but indeed, I           have at l...

The Rortrait—An Allegory. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 5 August 1804

The Portrait - An Allegory. BEAUTY, an artist of acknowledg'd-taste,     With graceful skill a modest form pourtray'd : Describ'd her gentle, and as Celia chaste, Whose charms were borrowed to adorn the maid. To judge the piece unnumber'd masters came And plaudit echo'd thro' the sounding hall Where LOVE, entranc'd, confest a rising flame.   By VIRTUE kindled in the hearts of all.       On every feature TRUTH bestow'd due praise ; Smiling, ESTEEM too compliments the maid'   And ADMIRATION, with astonish'd gaze The polish'd tin - the symmetry survey'd,   But pallid Envy little faults espies,       Which Vice's pencil might with ease re- move :   One fatal touch the chaste effect destroys,--- Adieu to Virtue, Innocence, and Love. -----------

SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 5 August 1804

S Y D N E Y.     The report that prevailed about Parramatta, and by which we were misled, stating   that the unfortunate infant that strayed from Prospect had been partly devoured by native dogs, was unfounded ; but we are extremely sorry to learn that the only fallibility   of that account consisted in the circumstances of its death: The body of the little     creature having been last week found at the verge of a pond in the neighbourhood of Toongabbee, where it had doubtless perished through fatigue and want.   The house of a Gentleman near to Parramatta was last week attempted to be broke   into during the night ; but the projectors   failing in the attempt, found means to gain       admittance to the store room, where they     had scarcely organized their plan of operation before they were alarmed b...

Observations on the Choice and Care of SHEEP. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 12 August 1804

Observations on the Choice and Care of SHEEP. " The Complete Farmer" advises that the grazier should always buy his sheep from land inferior to his own : that in the choice of sheep to breed the ram must be young, and his skin of the same colour as his wool, as the lambs will be of the same colour as his skin--the polled sheep, which are those that have no horns, are found to be the best for breeding. To know whether the sheep be sound or not, the farmer should examine the wool, chat none of it be wanting, and see that the gums be red, the teeth white and even, and   the brisket skin red, the wool firm, the breath sweet, and the feet not hot. Two years old is the best time for beginning to breed, and their first lambs should not be kept too long, to weaken them by suckling, but be sold as soon as conveniently may be. They will breed advantageously until seven years old. The farmers have a method of knowing the age of a sheep as that of a horse is known, by the mouth. Wh...

EXAMINATIONS BEFORE THE MAGISTRATES. TUESDAY, AUGUST 7. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 12 August 1804

EXAMINATIONS BEFORE THE MAGISTRATES. TUESDAY, AUGUST 7. Wm. Day, accused of being accessary to the robbery committed on board His Majes- ty's vessel Investigator, and of conveying on shore sundry articles of slop cloathing from the said vessel, underwent a long strict examination, wherein he made a confession of his own guilt, but declared he had been seduced by the persuasion of Robert Mat- thews, in whose especial charge he considered        the stores to be. - The prisoner was reman- ded. Thomas Evans, apprehended as an accom- plice in the offence, stood charged with having brought on shore a parcel containing a part of the stolen property, found upon him when apprehended. - Committed. James Steel, in whose possession sundry articles of the said property were found, said by him to have been deposited in the premises occupied by him by the above Day, accompanied by Matthews; and having also disposed of several articles, was likewise committed...

SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 12 August 1804

SYDNEY.     On Sunday last: His excellency went on board the Investigator, for the purpose of   minutely ascertaining the circumstances and extent of the robbery committed upon that vessel's stores by the miscreants now in con- finement. Fortunately it happens in this, as in every         other depredation that has been attempted on   the public property that the vigilance of   the executive authority does not admit the   possibility of a long-lived system of fraud and plunder; and the man that in the present in- stance stands principally accused as a traitor         to his trust has also betrayed a weakness which equally lays claim to detestation and contempt. Unwilling in the public mind to prejudice an individual, circumstanced as it is to prevent the object of allusion and tenacious of imputing guilt...

CIVIL COURT INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 12 August 1804

CIVIL COURT INTELLIGENCE.             Application for a Writ was made to the Civil Court on Tuesday, by a settler upon, the banks of the River Hawkesbury, against   a boat owner ; which being granted, was by consent of parties made immediately return- able. Yesterday the cause was heard : the circumstances as follow : The plaintiff a fortnight before had com- mitted to the defendant's boat 130 bushels of shelled maize, to be brought round ; but was rejected when it had arrived owing to its da- maged Condition ; wherefore the suit was in-stituted to recover its value. The plaintiff stated his case by saying, that the grain when boated was in sound and storeable condition ; he produced a sample which he affirmed to     be a true one, and concluded, without calling   evidence, by remarking generally that when a boat owner, or person in charge, received &...
