L"ypgS'"'OF"LIFE"AMKNDPROPERTY° BY FLOODS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. N DNEY, April 20. :Tho flood waters have continued to rise in the Upper and Lower Hunter distriots, till they have reached tremendous proportions. At West Maitland, 20 miles from Newcastle, on thoe. Hunter River,. it is the highest flood ever known since the town was established. Hundreds of people are flooded out. Single. ton, a township about 30 miles further up on the same river, is completely under water, and the country, being very, flat for miles round, known as Patrick's Plains, the sight is fearful to contemplate. During Monday night the excitement was very great, and when daylight came there were not more than eight houses out of the water. There are no lives reported as lost, but it is believed that there are three families on the roof of a.house whom their noiglhours have been unable as yet to rescue. About 20 miles further on, in the Upper Hunter district, the small township of Aber deen has suffered severely....

The Benalla Ensign. Published Weekly. BENALLA, FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 1870. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 29 April 1870

rsienaeii JPiteL4. Published 7PWekly/. JIENALLA, FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 1870. TarE questibn of immigration is once more prominently before the publio, and as usual some very absurd argumoents are being made use of, by the advocates for immigration as well as thoso against it. Weo Ihad always laboured under the idea that it was the one thing needful in a young country's caroeer to encourago population, even at the sacrifice preliminarily of a portion of its natural wealth (disposing of its lands at £1 per noro, for instance, payable in instalments of 2s. 6d. per annum), so that its producing powers hould be largely increased, and the general prosperity; of the state be benefittedpropor tionatoly, far in excess of what was lost by its preliminary liberality, by reason of the per. maneneo of theo consequent improvements. But we are now told that this is not so, and the Quixotio proposals of one journal in favour of immigration are mot by the equally absurd arguments of another oagainst it (...

MELBOURNE. April 27. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 29 April 1870

-MaELBOURNE, ' (rnos oun OWN ORREPODENT.) April 27, It is a matter of some regret that oIessrs Porter and Co. have found themselvesunaba to tatke up the whole of the contract on the first section of the North-eastern Ilailey for which they were the successful tenderers. But it is evidently the fairost way of settling the matter to have the whole of the wort retenderel for, which the Government haiv decided on doing. it will be a singular but by no means unlikely thing if the prices aro lower on the next opening of the tenders. At any rate, the delay will not be of very grave importance;: it being much better to have a clear understsndiog before entering on sush an important undertaltiriF as this, when it isbornein mend that the litigation between Corniah-and Bruce and the Govern. ment cost the country so rnuch,.and that the line to Ballarat is otill fettered with law ex. penses in the shape of an equity suit being enterqddinto bytjthle eypl;rsctors na-ainst the. CORONER'S INQUEST. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 29 April 1870

CORONER'S INQUEST.   Mr Wills, P.M., held an inquest on Tuesday last, at the Royal Hotel, concerning the death of George Munro, a shepherd in the employ of Mr Simson, of the Spring Station, who was found   dead in the bush near his hut about 20 miles from Tatong by Mr McDougall on the morning   of Monday last. Twelve jurymen were sworn in, Mr Joseph De Castro being chosen foreman.   Archibald McDougall, sworn, said - I am in charge of the Springs Station for Mr H. Norman Simson. I last saw deceased (who was a shepherd) on Friday, the 22nd April. The body is that of Munro. It was found about 20 miles from the head station. He was then well, and was in charge of   some sheep. I spoke to him for some time on Friday. I next saw him on Monday, the 25th   April, near the yard where his sheep were camped. He had a tent within 100 yards from the sheep-   yards. MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 6 May 1870

"FnoM0 Tn ,* INDEuNDEor." A. rather. ausing occurrence happened in connection with one of our principal farmors last week. That geotleman having purchased a nsow buggy of the latest pattern, decided upon building a shed for its reception. He carried out the idea by building a shed round and over, the vehicle as it stood. When the building was finished, it struck the talented architect that he had loft no door to got the buggy out. To work then he set his man to remove a portion of the roof and thenou take the buggy to pieces, so as to havo it handed out bit by bit. Having satisfactorily got the convoyance out, ho set to work and did what he should have done at first-made a door I Mr. Motherwell is trying the experiment of putting pure loaom on the footpaths instead of gravel as specified.' Some of the ratepayers object to this, but perhaps they may not bd aware that Mr. Motherwoll is prepared to put the specified gravel on should the loam not prove satisfactory. It is well known tha...
