THE VERISTS. [Newspaper Article] — Lilydale Express and Yarra Glen, Wandin Yallock, Upper Yarra, Healesville and Ringwood Chronicle — 15 May 1914

THE VERISTS. ,Of veristic opera I state my opinion -in most uncompromising terms: who ever wishes to improve his own or his fellow-men's artistic taste, should ab solutely shun it. Useless to draw dis tinotions, and, say that Puccini is su .perior to Lconcavallo; .he may be a moire wiily craftsman, but his music has as little genuineness. The suc css made to Mascagni's "Cavalleria hRusticana" on the plea of "tempera Ineni," "dramatic efliciency," and what not, has done a prodigous amount of harm, which might have been almost irietrievaible but for tho ceaseless en 'rgy with which 'a minority of music-, lovers halo protested against that score :and the countless counterfeits 'of lyrio drama which. it has begotten; Itron Massenet's "'La Navarraise" to Wolf-F?'errari's "Gioijeli della Madonna" WO have] so nlucih good music to study and to enjoy, that evein the second-rate ought 'to be excluded, especially when our object is culturo as well as enjoy mlent. T'le best of veristic musio is...

More recently, an Amn :r; can physician has been turmng his t: teiction, to the effects of bright- su a light on superficial caxcers. -Experi menting with that form -of. maligii .nt growth known as epithelioomata, i-:s investigator states ,that he has found the focussed rays of the sun as effioa cious as radiinm and X-rays. No Title [Newspaper Article] — Lilydale Express and Yarra Glen, Wandin Yallock, Upper Yarra, Healesville and Ringwood Chronicle — 15 May 1914

An inspection of the course in Ml Duddy's paddock, to be availed of by the newly-formed Healesville Race Club, was made last week by several members of the club. It was found that little expenditure would be re quired to put the course- in propel racing order, a sharp bend before entering the straight being the chief difiiculty to be overcome. This, how ever, no doubt will be obviated to meet the requireinents of the V. R. C. The length of the course is considered to be about 7 furlongs, and the sur roundings are in every way suitable for a race meeting Its close prox imity to the railway station is -a great point in its favor, and when every thing is in proper working order the club no doubt will ma:e rapid head way, and eventually become one of the best coteutry meetings in the State. The locally -owned racing mnai-e, Silvery Shore, has hbeen showing great form over hurdles in Melbourne. Her first two performances were really creditable ones, and she gives pro:nise cf proving a fl...
