WHAT MR. REID SAYS. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 7 July 1899

WHAT MR. REID SAYS. The accoiibts for the financial year, Mr. Reid daid, disclosed a most satis factory state of affairs. In spite of the large reductions made by Parlia ment in the Colonial Treasurer a pro posals for fresh taxation, the yea* closes with a surplus of £147,000. This is notwithstanding the increased payments beyond Parliamentary ap propriations of amounts totalling £180,000. The revenue, Mr, Eeid points out, shows an increase of £273,000 on the revenue for the previous year, in spite, of a decrease of £100,000 in the land, tax (owing to the fact that the prev ious year had the oredit of some ar rears), and a reduction in Customs duties greater in amount than the new duties put on for the last half-year. Mr. Reid adds \~—(t In view of all the circumstances, and the distress in the colon j?, owing to the droughts, these, returns provide marvellous proof of the buoyancy of the colony.'

Our Roads. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 14 July 1899

Our Roads. The Sydney mail which should hnve reached hero on Monday night Inst ?was delnyed at the M'Laughlin River, . that stream having become uucrossable ''?through the previous night's rain. fThe mail from Bombala to Oooma met with a similar fate, in fact was blocked between the M'Laughlin and -1,. - ? l. n.. t ? with the aid of planks the bairscontain ing the letters, we're wivuug across, and the two mails were brought in at the came time, the Monday' night's moil thus being twenty-four hours luto. If is n state of^affairs to be deplored, that, after the thousands of pounds expended on this roa-l for its mainten ance and improvement, and tho erec tion of numerous bridges over the different rivers, a couple of inches of rain should have tl,e effect of delay ing the mail twenty-four hours and depriving us of the Sydney papers for three days.
