WIDDER SPRIGGINS' DAUGHTER. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 29 July 1893

WIDDER SPRIGGINS' DAUGHTER. 'Twas on a beauteous summer morn, When things were up and comin', And all among the pumpkin vines The bumble-bees were hrmmin', ,k an early half-mile walk, _,s everyhody'd orter, When in the cowpath I was met By Widder Spriggins' daughter. Her eyes were black as David's ink, Her cheeks were red as fury, And one smack of her luscious lips Would bribe a judge or jury. I bow'd-she curcheyed just the way Her nice old mar had taught her, She smiled, and oh I my heart was gone To Widder Spriggins' daughter. Says I, " My dear, how do ye do ?" Says she, "I reckon finely;" Says I, " Of all the gals I know You look the most divinely." I snatched a kiss-she slapped my face, In fact, just as she'd orter " Behave yourself, how dare you, sir, Cried Widder Spriggins' daughter. Just then an old rampageous sheep, Who had been feeding near, sir, Squared off, and like a ton of bricks, He took me with his head, sir; I landed in a pond chuck full Of frogs and filthy water, An...

OAKLANDS HOONDS. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 29 July 1893

: OAKLANI)S HOUNIS. Since the last meet of tLe pack the continued fall of rain has left the counti'y in a rather sloppy condition, but a few flue days and a high wind will soon place it in fine hunting order. The fixture of Saturday being at Essendon naturally drew together a very large gathering, and at the appointed hour there was a very strong following to greet the acting master. Punctually to time a move was made along Buckley street until Budesbach was reached. where the throw-off took place, the line selected leading across into Mr Jas. Anderson's paddocks , thence the course was rather zigzag, turning south across Spring Creek into what was originally part of C. B. Fisher's property ; then, turning west, the course of the Salt water River-which was in very high flood-was followed ; thence through Mrs Beale's, over the North Pole road into Mr Fitzpatrick's. through Mrs Dodd's into Mr R. Delahey's ; thence out on to the cemetery lane, where a very welcome check was ordered, as...

THE ENGAGEMENT RING. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 29 July 1893

THE ENGAGEMENT RING. The first one usually doesn't cost much; but it costs enough for all that. You are about twenty when .you begin looking over the' jewellers' advertisements, and find yourself wondeiing if she will be pleased with what you save and pinch so to get. At length you have bought it. Then comes the eventful evening. You stroll down the street feeling your impor tance at every step ; with thumping heart you pass into your love's sweet presence. There she sits expectant. Before you know anything about it her hand is in yours, over her taper fingers the jewelled band is slipped, and what follows imme diately you remember so well it need not be recalled. Hank Hilliard was born and reared away down in the. wild Ozak region of Christian county, Mo., almost within gun-. shot of the famous Bald Knobbers of South Missouri. He had never been out of the county, much less out of the State, and his ideas of engagement rings were limited. When pretty Sally Diggs pretty in spite of h...

A CYCLONE MADE A RICH MAN OF HIM. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 29 July 1893

C CYCLONE MADE A RICH MAN OF HIM. He was a Western man, and he was telling several gentlemen in the smoking ear all about .the natural advantages of the wild and woolly West. "Don't you have cyclones out there sonletimes ?" was asked of him. "Cyclones !" was the reply. " Why, of course, we do; but you'll never hear me complain about that, for one of 'em made a rich man of me." "Would you mind telling us about it ?" queried one of his surprised hearers. "Certainly not," was the reply. "Five years ago'I bought a prairie farm out in Kansas. There were no buildings of any kind upon the place when I bought it-at least, nothing but a cyclone cellar. In this cellar the former occupant of the place had been content to dwell with his family, and here, too, my wife and I and our two small children passed our first night upon the farm. "Now gentlemen, comes the strangest part of my story. As I emerged from our cellar on the following morning the first thing that my wondering eyes beheld were a...

NOT LOOKING FOR A LADLE. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 29 July 1893

NOT LOOKING FOR A LADLE. Not many years ago, before the " boom- " -struck Southern California, Mr L---, '; old New Yorker, had a large ranch near Los Angelos. ,He was fond of good company and a good dinner, and frequently entertained house parties at the comfortable old fashioned Mexican hacienda. Among others who made a stay with one of the New York parties was Mis M-. Although a woman of " uncertain age," she retained much charm of manner, and her quick wit was respected by everyone who had come in con tact with it. Mr L-- was a jolly bachelor of perhaps 40 summers, who had. seen much of the world and had a magnetic personality. He was' a man of enormous proportions; some of them, no doubt, encouraged to their growth through his fondness for good things to eat and good wines to cheer the bachelor. The party was at dinner at the ranch one day. The host, the bachelor, sat at one end of the table; and Miss M--- was on his left, He had been chatting with her for some time when she ask...
