Selected Poetry. IN THE CITY. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 20 August 1887

Selected Poetry. TI TIIHl CITY. See her crouching on the doorstep, Oh so cold ! Clasping tight her ragged shawl, so Thin anl old. Weary with it ceaseless craving Just to die, And her eyes so heavy laden Caonot cry. In there no omo who couldh help her ? No one near; Are there none who can Irotect her; No one dear ? Young and fair, with yeyars before her. Is her life. Neught lbut struggling, noughtbut striving In the strife. Night has cotme, the moon in pity Veils her light, Shadowed by the hoavy doorway Out of sight. No one, mocks her wih it a lok in Passitpg by, And alone and all unqnostioned Dous hoe dlie, All too soon, the tmorning light will Pierce the clouds, .Leave heor! dto not. n wondlor, with the Gaping crowds, sitw shecatme th,,r ? who she was? she Now in dead ;

Walhalla. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 20 August 1887

Walhalla. (From our own Correspondent.) We have with regret to chronicle the death of our. oldest residdnt in Walhalla, Mr Samuel Crver, shire seccretary, who died on Friday last after two short weeks' illness from intliamanlion of the lnngs. When the Stringero. creek was rushed, sFio; 25 years ago, Mr Carver woas among the lirt on the field. Shortlv fter the several lineo of reef were discovereod. Amongst the foremost the Cohen's line (which has Rince yielded so much of the previous metal) the inhabitants began to increase, and of course, the business places and imen likewien. Amongst the latter we lind Mr Carver, as an hotelkeeper. Astime moved on, andi population increased, it was found tneceossry to form the place into a borough to mak othe residents contribute towards tile formation, erection and maintenance of roads, bridges, &c., which, at the timie was much required. This was carried out about 16 yea.ts ago, and Mr Carver got the appointmentt of town clerl-. This pos...

A general consensus of opinion oh tains that the life of the Australian na tire poaulation of Eiropean dlescent is shorter than that of their progenitors. There can scarcely be grounds to war rant the assumption, nor yet a safe basis, by the collatiion of facts in con neection with vital statistics in the exis tence of this young colony, to draw definite conclusions. A priori. 'Ihe probability is, that under the genial sky of the colony, with all its nccotm panlitnnts of pure air, good food, ge neral comfort, well-divided hours of In lir, rest, and recreation, life will be con silerably prolonged instead of being cut short. Tit the colony, a rapid growth is made from the age of eleven to eighteen years, and during this pe riod, there must be a corresponding physical t:r. At this time too, the youth, from precocity, are less careful of their habits of bod...
