MOUNT USEFUL DIGGINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 5 September 1862

MOUNT USEFUL DIGGINGS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) SIR, I am much obliged for the insertion of my last letter, and, in accordance with my   promise, I feel much pleasure in communica- ting with you on the subject of these diggings, which are now attracting so large a population to Gippsland. You are already aware that Donnelly's Creek is thirty-five miles nearer to Sale than the Jordan, and that the latter gold field has become comparatively neglected for the former. Donnelly's Creek, which was the first discovered, is the diggings par excelleice of this locality, and was found by a party of two men, who had been out prospecting for some months on the tributaries of the Jordan and Aberfeldy. This same party I recollect seeing some time since prospecting on the Ovens, and were then as now, known for the persevering assiduity with which they followed their preca- rious avocation. Poor fellows, they deserved a beter fate than they have met with ;men who find employment f...

SALE POLICE COURT (Before J. L. M. Carey, Esq, P.M .) September 2nd, 1862 McDonald v. P. K: Simmons. Mr. Patten appeared for the plaintiff.   Defendant, the Rev. P. K. Simmons, was charged by Sergeant McDonald   witlh illegally detaining a cow and calf, his property. It appeared that the cow in question was purchased by McDonald along with some other cattle from the late Wm. Foster, Esq., of Boisdale, and that the defendant had it in his yard and milked it for some considerable time, when it was turned out dry. Mr.   Simmons said Mr. Foster had made him a present of the cow. Sergeant   McDonald produced the receipt, and in being sworn said he called on the rev. defandant: and took an order to him from Mr. Montgomery, who had the management of the late Mr. Foster's affairs. This order Mr. Simmons threw over the fence when presented, and said he despised both Sergeant   McDonald and the law. The Bench remanded the case f...
