MR NEWMAN HITS BACK TO THE EDITOR OF THE "COURIER" [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 3 September 1914

MR NEWMAN HITS BACK J TO THE EDITOR OF THE "COURIER" Sir,-Mr Minchin's playful remarks on myself probably please him ; they certainly amuse me. His position re minds one of the ass, who, clothing himself in a lion skin, set out to frighten his fellows, succeeding admir ably till he attempted to roar-his roar proved a bray, revealing his humble origin. Mr Minchin in his previous letler to the "Courier" stated that the figures he quoted were those of Mr Packer. That was the statement I accepted. Those were the the figures I criticised. If Mr Minchin now changes his ground by asserting that they were Mr Kibb!s figures, he is only consistent in his inconsistency. Mr Minchin seems to be obsessed of the idea that he is the sole source from which political wisdom may be drawn. He will come along, no doubt, in the last issue before the election and, with ...

POLITICAL UNIONISM TO THE EDITOR OF THE "COURIER" [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 3 September 1914

POLITICAL UNIONISM TO THE EDITOR OK THE "COURIER" Sir,-As briefly as possible I wish to put before your readers some facts bearing od the question of "Tbe Mor ality of Present-day Political Unionism." Mr W. G. Spence, who should know what he talks abouts, said : ' The man who joins a union becomes a better man. He becomes more social, and consequently hecomes more unselfish. His membership makes him a betier husband, a better father, a better and more active citizen." These surely are nobie sentiments, and this is the sort of unionism we have a'l been look ing for. According to Mr Spence, it is only neccssary for all men to join unions and the millenium is at hand. The virtue of political unionism is so well recognised by the officials and bosses, that they are prepared in many cases, to lake strong measures for the regeneration of mankind. . Mr Frank Hyett said that "the life of a non unionist should be made a hell upon earth." This, no doubt, was intended charitably, in order that...
