THE FLAW. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 6 May 1914

THE FLAW. Within the church a chant ascends, The flower-decked aisle divides The bridegroom's relations and friends From those that are the bride's. And he is there, a stalwart youth Of manly charm possessed, And she, a prize in very truth, In pearly satin dressed. The vows are made, the prize is his, Yes, really his, at last! But as he claims the nuptial kiss His brow is overcast. And when the joybells peal on high, When wine and speeches flow, There comes into his sparkling eye A furtive look of woe. Beside him sits his chosen bride, In his she slips her hand, But though she smiles on him in pride She does not understand. His hidden anguish, though acute, Must all alone be borne— The toecap of his patent boot Is pressing on a corn. —Jessie Pope.

Subscription Dance. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 6 May 1914

Subscription Dance. The Mechanics' Hall was beautifully decorated on Friday night last, the occasion being the first of this year's series of subscription dances. There were visitors present from Donald, Watchem, Kaneira and Wycheproof, and altogether about 40 couples graced the floor. The music was excellent, in fact the time kept by Mr and Mrs Merrit was of the very best, and their playing came in for much merited applause from the gay throng of dancers. The floor was in excellent order and the hon Secetary (Mrs Hancock) had a sumptuous repast laid out on a prettily decorated table for the merry-makers. Altogether the first Subscription Dance of the season can only be described as a brilliant success. Appended is a description of a few only of the dresses worn by the ladies, they being the only completed cards handed in to us on the evening of the gathering: — Mrs. Hancock, black crepe-de-chine over black satin, Mrs Loel, violet charmeuse, crepe-de- chino overdress Mrs J. Warne, t...

BRAIN EXERCISE. . There lias been serious trouble in a certain school. One of the teachers said he was no believer in the old hackneyed system of teaching. "What is wanted." said he, "is something which will make the chil dren think and reason Tor them selves.. Jkro addition and subtraction are mechanical. In accordance with his ideas, he gave his pupils one hundred questions, of which Hie following is a specimen: "What is it that can go up a spojit. down, but cannot go down a spout up?" The ibrain-fever hospitals there i abouts were full of children for weeks afterward?, and the teacher was dis ' missed without a character, yet the answer to liio riddle was very simple I —"An umbrella."
