[corruoa-T.] Ihe career of the Clarkes, whotin f: stid the Braidwood and neighboring distritcts during the sixties, is one of the most fearful in the annals of Aus tralian crime. They illustrated tribal "lwleasness in a civilisedl land, for the family, root and branch, was steeped in viciousness. John Clarke, the father of the family, died in Oouuburn Gaol, while under a charge of having • murdered a black tracker. His wife, whose maiden name was Connell, had four' brothers. One of them was charged with being accessory to the murder of a party of policemen; another was serving ten. years in *Darlinghurst Gaol, having previously served five years for highway robbery ; and his wife was in the same place for receiving stolen property. A third brother was shot dead by the police; a fourth had sentence of death passed upon him for highway robbery and wounding Two ...

Local News. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 19 March 1909

Local News. Now that the dancing. season is close at hand the demand for better accommo. dation at the shire hall is looked upon by patrons as imperative. The room at the back should be exclusively used as a supper room. The boiling of water, washing of crockoryware, drying dish clothes, &c.. should be relegated to an outside building, For many years this has proved a great drawback and bitter complaints have been made. The place is not half large enough and when a por. tion is utilised as a kitchen the room he. comes blocked and uncoimfortaile. The erection of a separate building, fitted with a boiler and other conveniences is cer tainly required. There is another inmpor. tant matter that demands special and immediate attention and that is a retiring room for ladies. Since the op6ning of the hall either Mr. Aleton's or the eni. neer's offi?s hare been set apart for this purposee; neellesa to say, a most objec tional,le practice. It would not be out of place if the whole of ...
