A Blunder by a Judge. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 12 June 1889

A Blander by a Judge. It is an ancient and honourable maxim of English law (observes the London Standard) that every wrong has its reined}:, .against someone. If this good rule be not improved out of existence by reform, the unhappy governess of Great Grirnsby should be able to get big damages somewhere. She brought an action quite intelligible to . the lay mind. To put sulphur upon a bedroom ffcij t6 throw cold water orer a person asleep, are assaults if anything short of woundB-.jand... assaults come under that title. Xhoc governess charged her interesting pupils with these offences, and their mother with abetting them. All denied the accusatisfl, though it does not seem to have been disputed that the sulphur bnd cold water were administered by somebody. The County .Couft ?Udge non suited the plaintiff in regard to' the young ladies. But,- sympathising ?'ith a fellow creature who, as they say, had £ou$hl at Ephesus, he amended the pleadings) and gave the sufferer £50, for the reas...

The Famous Smelting Works near Freiburg, Saxony. (CONTINUED). [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 12 June 1889

The Famous Smelting Works near Freiburg, Saxony. (C'osii.vuro). In tho year 1857 the liutinan commenced in a most diffident manner to intunv.pt the much abused sulpliurous acid and convert it I into the sulphuric acid of commerce, and ' growing bolder, he was ten years after so far ndvanoetl as to lio able to pay the miner for tlie sulphur contents of the ora as a voluni.'u j.roduct ;, nay the farmer strewed the much hatc'i stuff on his fields, with his own hand, as a component part of supuphosphate, the most valuable manure. In this way metallurgy turned the foe into a friend, the destroyer into thn producer, the malicious fumes into the generators of nourishment. At present the sulphpric acid is aftnr the silver and lead the most valuable product of the huts. In the year 1875, 10,632 tons of the acid were produced, and as by-products 622^ tons of sulphate of iron and sulphurous matter. The total value of the result of this progress for the same year amounted to 610, 240 formerly c...

A Remarkable Story. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 12 June 1889

A Remarkable Story. In a recent issue of the Paris SocitU it Qtographio M. Camille Donls recounts the experiences he underwent in a journey hi North- Western Africa. Disguised aa a native, it appears, he landed on tho wept ooast near Cape Carnet, 700 mills south of Morocco, pretending to the people of that region that he had been shipwrecked. At first he was roughly dealt with ; bnt finally he gained the conBdence of his captors and, after five months' wanderings, by dint of craft he made his way to Morocco. Here his disguise was discovered, and he' was thrown into- .prison, to-be released presently at the- 'instigation of the British Minister. The adventures recorded are of interest, as they give a new version to the popular story of the great desert. The Oulad Deliro, into whose bands M. Souls fell he says, are unusually intelligent. They speak a pure Arabic, founded upon constant study of the Koran. They are monogamous, and treat their wives with the greatest affec tion and respe...

The recent vet sod stormy weather has served to accentuate in a narked degree the two greatest disabilities under which our community labours, viz., the wretuhed state of our river bar, coupled with inadequate shipping accommodation ; and the glaring necessity for incorporating our town. The vagaries of the T. S. N. Co.'q officers in taking the Moruya cargo to Nclligen is now familiar to all, and it appears things are never so bad that they could not have been worse ; for have we not reason to be thankful that our goods were not taken back to Ulladulla or Wollongong, and that we were not oharged doable freight thereou. The most important point brought out during the past week's events, is the state of the bar ; for however irate we might be against the I. S. N. Company, they most assuredly are not responsible for the silting up of the bar ; and further, it is a moral im possibility for a boat, drawing seven feet of water, to enter a river having a depth of only six feet at its mouth...

Humour in the House. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 19 June 1889

Humour in the House Whiht the Assembly was engaged with Mr. Cullen's motion for adjournment on Tups day evening Mr. Crick rose on a point of order. Having referred to a passage i in ' May's Parliamentary practice ' prescribing that during discussions on military matters omcers onry hhuuiu w whulw- .--^ — — Legislative precincts unarmed, he pointed out that certain officers were present, and asked, considering the nature of the debate, if the Speaker would ascertain whether they were „ bearing arms or not. The Speaker thought thdt the hon. member could scarcely bo serious. Mr. Crick, amidst a good deal of merriment, assured the House that he was never more serious in his life. The speaker then said that if Mr. Crick really feared that the gentlemen referred; to w*re armed, well and good, but for his own part he must say that in the absence of evidence to the , contrary the Assembly had a right to assume ? that they were unarmed. Later on in the evening the debate was illumined by ano...
