A SUGGESTION. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 June 1878

A SUGGESTION. (To the Editor of the Standard.) SIm,-An old resident of the district Is about to depart from amongst us and seek his fortune in "fieolds airesh and pastures new." I refer to MAr S. Allardyce, of Riversdale. Surely, Sir, something ought to be done in the shape of a testimonial or ban quet to him. As is well-known Mr Allar dyco was for several years in the Shire Council, and also held office as President, besldes being the originator of our Pastoral and Agricultural Society, which is now in such a flnurishing state; and in whatever capacity, whether as councillor or otherwise, he always showed himself to be an energetic and painstaking man. As a capitalist also and an employer of labor, his loss will be universally felt throughout the district. Although I was always politically opposed to him, and did not agree with many of his actions, yet still I think that a man like iMr Allardyco should not be allowed to leave the district without some recognition being taken of his...

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 June 1878

MELBOURNE LET fER. t4 ti (PROM OUR OWN COtRRESPONDENT.) 0 Atmospheric conditions and their a results have absorbed a good deal of t our attention recently; not only have ° we had a repetition of the flood of g waters similar to what deluged our Y Yarra banks three months ago, inflict ing renewed loss upon factories and J residences in riparian localities, but " boreas has been unusually boisterous P oven for this time of the year and N marine disasters and mishaps have been t unpleasantly frequent. One steamer b bound for Adelaide had to put back c after duly accomplishing about half of t her journey and losing nine valuable horses; another took nearly three days to reach Portland from Melbourne, and also lost three horses, which were 0 entered for the Wtrrnambool races. These matterstranspiringsimultaneously 0 with intelligence to the wreck of the Garonno, the accident to the Cuzco, and following so soon the loss of thie Loch Ard, has quite a nautical bias to public sympathy, which...

CHIPS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 June 1878

o H I P S. -4--C There is a poor old woman lying sick in her cottage, near unto the U.T. bridge, my masters I She has been ill these many days. Sihe is a member of the Church of England; but none of those who should have ministered to her have been near unto her dwelling; but you know, you know, it has been very cold and wet, and she is very poor; but still I have seen one who, in spite of wind, cold, and rain, my masters, has been in constant attendance upon her; and who think you it is, I eask ? Why, no other than the Wesleynn minister, and he a perfect stranger in the land, and the widow not one of his flock I Of course no one knows she is sick and in poverty I May be she is too lowly even to be missed from her seat on Sundays amongst the true wor shippers (I) and they when they road this will doubtless say, as they lift up their eyes, "'Toby, we knew not of this thing," Needs it an advertisement, my superiors ? if so, take this hint in stead, and if you go near unto the hill of ...

TUESDAY, 18th JUNE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 June 1878

TUESDAY, 18th JUNE. The court having been opened, the Police Magistrato said-the evidence in these cases (Lipecombo v Blain) is certainly unsatisfactory to me. The summonses charge the defendant with selling without a license on three distijnct occasions end names the dates. The witnesses do not swear positively to those dates, and had the summonses said " on or about" it would have been very different. The charge is a criminal one, the fine being no loss than £25, and for the second offence, three months imprisonment ; I therefore dismiss all the cases. The Police Magistrate then read the clause in which it states a brewer must pay £25 for his license and concluded with these remarks -" I now dismiss these summonses and must caution you; be cautious."

Alexandra & Yea Standard PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY "EXCELSIOR." SATURDAY, 22ND JUNE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 June 1878

hIqtaTdIla & At tiatdard UII3LISlIPD EVERY SATURDAY * EXOE ILIO II." SATURDAY, 22ND JUNE, As the time approaches for the re assembling of Parliament ' for the dis putoh of business," we may well pause to enquire whether the meaning of tlhtt backneyed phrase will be faithfully realized, or whether the next, like the last, session will be mainly given sver to the multiplication of words, to quar. rolling between the two branches of the Legislaturo, and a repetition of the deadlook, temporarily terminated by the passage of the Payment of Members Bill. Judging from the public utter ances of the Premier of the colony, it is to be feared there is only too much reason to suppose that such will be the ease, and that all the unpleasant conse quences of which the country has had such unpleasant experiences will again ensue. Our only hope to the contrary is either that the acts of the Ministry will not be commensurate with their words, or that their fol owers will prove wiser than the ...

inrrpe urbeurr. [ We do not hokl ourselveses eponsible for the oplntous ezproted by our corrcapondents.] TIlE YEA ELECTION. (To the Editor of thie ,vandard.) Stn,-I do not know whether to laugh or cry over the tirade of abuse poured out against myself in thie last issue of your paper by your correspondent, the rejected of Alex nndra and the scorn of Yes, for having licked this little self-said shallow-pated, treacherous, and cowardly "' toadstool" at the late shire election. Of course the other tool -well, as he was only a tool, we will let him drop now. This is the sort of language I find mixed up with some grandiloquent words in the flfthly paraphrase of your miser. able seribbler. I don't know the councillor to whom he alludes, but I feel sure he is as high above his accuser in honesty of purpose and moral character as heaven is above the earth. Of course I cannot aspiro to use such language ns he uses, for I never was at a Hedge school in Ireland, you know; but pray publish this...

YEA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 June 1878

YEA. (FROM OUR CORRnnEPONDENT.) In consequence of the difficulty and delay experienced in getting summonses signed, and in making the necessary declarations when selecting land, for want of a Justice of the Peace, a public meeting was called a few days ago for the purpose of petitioning the Govern ment to appoint a resident magistrate in Yea at once. Mr Don Ild M'Neil was mentioned as tihe gentleman most elegible for so high an heonor,aa being a man of unblemished character and unswerving integrity. I am assured that Mr M'Neil is thoroughly qualified in every respect to held a commission of the peace with credit to himself and security to the public interests. The floods have carried ruin and distruction among the fences along the low-lying lands of the Goulburn and Muddy Creek, and farmers will be occupied for some time in re-erecting them. The oldest inhabitants say they never before saw the creek so high; it rapidly rose on Wednesday night, attlining its maximum about 6 o'clock o...

A NEW STYLE OF BRICK KILN. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 29 June 1878

A NEW STYLE OF BRICK KILN. A new style of brick kilo, the use of which will greatly expedite the work of brick burn. ing forms tile subject of some remarks in the London Enlineer. A kiln of the kind de scribed has been erected and tried In England, and the fact that the trial lihas proved the new kiln to have nmany decided advantages renders thle description that is given of it very interesting. The kiln is described ns being losfr. long and fit. broad-a very different size to tile ordinary brick kiiln. The "ray" bricks are placed upoin iron waggons which carry themn through the entire length of the kiln, and bring them out at the end thoroughly baked. The fire is in the middle of the kiln, and the draught of hot air pasoes out towards a flue or chimney at the end where the bricks are put in. By this ileanls the bricks are gradually packed before reaching the fires, anld after paesing the intense heat of tile central portion, they gradually cool before being drawn out at thie " rece...
