Erickson were crossing the bay from Circle Bulge to this city when they were struck by the sudden and heavy squall which occurred at that time. In a few minutes the sea became so heavy that their boat was partly filled with water and they were iu danger of swamping. August Nelson sculled the craft into a shallow spot opposite the residence of P. G. Swan, ac- complishing this justas the boat completely £llcd and sank beneath its occupants. Luckily the water at that place was not more than four foet deep, and the young men were able to wado ashore, taking the boat with them. Had they been swamped in deeper water their con- dition would have been hazardous, as the skiff was too small to support their weight. To tho Editor or Tho Independent: SEVASTOPOL, August 6.—Just the best weather out for haying, and that business is nearly completed, there being but little grass remaining ija the fields. The crop, of h a y i s excellent this year, meadows yield- ing from two to two and one-half tons to the acre, anything smaller than that being ' considered a poor crop. Grain, as a rule, looks well, though some fields' are damaged by rust and weevil, not much being expec- ted from fields thus attacked. Mrs. Hannah Shaffstall, of Hudson, Ind., is visiting for a few days with the. family of Charles Boyce. She intends to remain in this county until the latter part of Au- gust, whenshe will return to her home in Indiana.
