^^¦ l . i i - _ - _ nliTWrrTHKll-W-T--f-ImW ^ WmWL uKSLwRsM . ImtdmawSmTtaWSj Judging a Good Cow . Perhaps more has been written on the art of judg ing cows than on any other matter connected with dairying , and now , after all that has been said , the American Da iryman , in alluding to Guenons theory , remarks : If vou want to get a good , profitable animal , von had better first see that she gives a large mess of rich milk , and then , having first secured ills point , indulge your fancy for short hair , Jiindruff , Quirls and yellow grease in the skin , inm . horns , slim tails , smooth hoofs , big belly veins , and all the other fancies that fashion loves to revel in . To be frank , we must admit that there is truth in theabove . With all that may be said in regard to the exterior markings and interior construction , the breeders have settled down to the conclusion that the only method of determining the qualifications of a cow was to test her at the pail . We doubt if there is...

Rm \ m _^_\_ W ____ W §_ % . ~\ _ LS mmfflmWSmmmi ^ MpXrii IE—Wm u lB _________ in __!_____ r ! _ r > L . Mn Feeding the Layers . We do not mean feeding 1 the liens , but the laying hens . If the flock , or any portion thereof must be sent to market , then different feeding is necessary . Our business now is feeding the lajdng hens in order to assist them to furnish eggs . We do not feed the hen because we desire to get her fat , and if given plenty of corn , although it will keep the laying hen warm , it does not provide her with all the constituent elements that assist in forming an egg . It helps the yolk very materially , but the hen is compelled to assort her food . After she has eaten , sufficient corn to provide the yolk , and to supply bodily heat , her next step is to find something for the albumen or white . This she procures from meat or milk , and also from the gluten of wheat , oats , barley and buckwheat . These grains also contain lime and mineral matter , ...

APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 13 February 1886

APIARY Bees Flying on Christmas . , Dr . H . E . Dorr , Warden , 111 ., writing to American Bee Journal , says : One year ago last November I began the winter with thirteen good colonies of bees , packed in chaff in double and single walled hives , with plenty of natural stores . I lost four colonies in wintering , three having starved or frozen to death , as some will have it , and one being queenless I count as lost . I began the season of 1885 with nine colonies , and increased them to fourteen by division . I am now , wintering them all on the summer stands , packed with corn cobs and hay chaff on the sides , and on top I use corn silk instead of cushions . The hay chaff scattered over a layer of cobs fills up the unevenness and packs closely . From the above number of colonies I extracted DIHJ pounds of honey , a little more than half of it being from clover , and the rest from heart s-ease . I alBO have about 200 po ^ ds of comb honey in frames , and about 100 one-pound sectio...

Get at the Facts . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 13 February 1886

Get at the Facts . ¦ Whatever may bo _ the difference of opinion about prohibition , no one can object to the measure brought forward in the United States Senate for the appointment of a Committee on the Alcoholic , Liquor Traffic . Its objeoc is to get at facts . The reasoning of its advocates is that no wise legislation can be had , no beneficial discussion that is not based upon facts . These should be accurately ascertained and by an authority that no one can question . The proposed Commission is to consist of five persons selected solely with leference to personal fitness and capacity for an honest , impartial , and thorough investigation . The bill stipulates that all of them shall not be advocates of prohibitory legislation or of total abstinence , and that they shall serve without salary . Their duty shall be to investigate the alcoholic liquor traffic , its relations to revenue and taxation , and its general economic , criminal , moral , and scientific aspects in connection...

How to Economize . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 13 February 1886

How to Economize . Mr . Edward Atkinson demonstrated before the Woman s Club at Boston , how it was not only possible but pleasant to live on $ 200 a year , including ample food , light , heat , clothes , room rent and leave a slight margin for extravagance . He demonstrated one phase of the subject by wearing an $ 8 . 50 suit of clothes . An eighteen-pound ham was cooked at the cost of a cent s worth of oil , and a turkey warranted to be tough was made tender by the expenditure of one and a half cents worth of oil , at the same time affording light for reading . Such an application of the true principles of economy would soon make many a , family independent in purse and spirit .

A Fraud Caught Up . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 13 February 1886

A Fraud Caught Up . The FARM , FIELD AND STOCKMAN receives many letters from correspondents who have suffered from frauds . Among the most vicious are alleged agricultural journals , run simply in the interests of fraudulent and swindling advertisers . Among the letters making known frauds , received on February 3 , was one to us , being an open letter from a correspondent , to the Postoffice Inspector , inclosing a circular of a paper called the Chicago Farm Journal . There was also an advertisement of a lottery enterprise , which offered to give land in Florida to every subscriber of an alleged agricultural paper called the Farming World . One of the editors personally visited the Postoffice Inspector , calling his attention to the open letter received , and within forty-eight hours , Mr . Thomas S . Gardner , who professes to be the publisher of the alleged Chicago Farm Journal , was arrested and taken before . Commissioner Hoyne , and held to appear in $ 1 , 000 bonds . Among th...
