AIMS OF STUDENTS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1877

AIMS OF STUDENTS . •The venerable Philetus Dobbs D . D . of Philadelp hia whose profound wisdom and known veracity , as well as his long experience in religious and secular matters makes his opinion of great value has just returned from a visit to the Antipodes . In a course of lectures which he is giving on the country opposite to us in customs and institutions , as well as situation , he relates a conversation in which he gives the following account of the aims and occupation of our college student astonishing greatly the inhabitants of the Antipodes with whom he was conversing . His description of the aims and occupations of the student may not apply as nearly to our own University as to those of the East , but we certainly are not far behind our sister colleges in devising ways and means for occupying the time ^ of our students . Outcollege politics may perhaps be considered as counterbalancing some of the distractions which have not yet found their way into western institutions...

. ^ BDITOBIAI ** ." ' ^m [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1877

. ^ BDITOBIAI ** . ^m , We are pleased to call attention to the address of Professor Morrow on the subject of Agricultural Education as being full of practical thought on this branch of learning , both to students and farmers of the state . The College of Agriculture of our University has never been in charge of one man long enough to test its efficiency and bring it into favorable notice even among the friends of agricultural education . Practical experiments have , to some degree , been carried on , their . results published and many things have been done in this department in a miscellaneous way . The college has , however , lacked that singleness of purpose , that marshaling up means and forces , literary , practical and scientific that is necessary to build up a successful course of instruction in any university . We think that in the address referred to , is set forth the true idea of an a < -ricu ! tural education . Education of this kind can- not be so intensely p...

The canal is sixteen miles in length and has at the sea-end a harbor covering 250 acres which , however , is not quite completed . —Popular Science Monthly . CANTATA ,- . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1877

CANTATA ,- . The shades of night were falling fast , As through a college village passed A youth , who bore , through snow and ice , A banner with the strange device , Cantata ! His brow was , sad , his eye beneath , Flashed like a falchion in its sheath , And like a silver clarion rung The accents of that well known tongue , Cantata ! In happy homes he saw the light Of students fires gleam warm and bright , Above him Eichberg s gas jets shone , And from his lips escaped a groan , Cantata ! Try not to pass the Professor said , Dark lowers the tempest overhead ; The fearful lessons , long and wide . But loud that clarion voice replied , Cantata ! O stay , a maiden said , and rest Thy weary head upon this breast . A tear stood in his bright blue eye , But still he answers with a sigh , Cantata ! Beware examinations dark ; Beware the awful fussing mark . This said his fellows , true and right . His voice replied far in the night . Cantata ! A singing man , in the morning red Was found ...

OUR EXCHANGES . The Exchanges for January are for the most part tard y in their appearance . Many that we hoped to have received before this h ^ ve not appeared on our table . We hope they have not cut us off for we send the ILLINI to all our exchange friends and expect them to return the compliment . If they do not receive our magazine they will favor us by letting us know . The Anbury Review comes to hand a little late . We take it up and turn to the heading Clippings and Exchanges 1 and find notices of two exchanges and a clipping , That clipping is an article from the ILLINI entitled George Sands and George Eliot clipped ofits subject but otherwise copied word for word , occupying about three columns of the Reviewi We like to have bur articles copied but we do not like to have them clipped of all credit , especially to the amount of three columns . We presume that this is an oversight on the part of the Review , and that it will be made all rig ht . The last number contains the ...

AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1877

AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION- From an Address bv Prof . G . F . Morrow , of the School of . Igricttltitrc , Illinois J tidlist rial I nivcrsity . In comply ing with the request of the Faculty that , at the commencement of my work in the University , 1 should thus publicl y say some words concerning Agricultural Education and especially concerning the College of Agriculture and its work , I bear in mind that to perform is better than to promise ; to quietly and faithfully do one s work is vastly more important than the speaking of any words about what that work is to be ; and that we have the best of authority for the statement , that if anyone is justified in boasting , it is he who has finished his task rather than he who is just beginning . It is not onlv proper but it is a pleasure for me to express my appreciation of the kindly words of welcome- which have just been spoken , and mv equally grateful appreciation for the less formal greeting 1 have received from the faculty , students ,...
